Xiaomi Box Remote loses connection constantly

by fizban1

My xiaomi box remote (brand new from Walmart) constantly loses it's connection. I tried new batteries, updating the mi box's OS. Any other ideas?

*** Update **** A factory reset did not help. I returned the unit to Walmart and exchanged it for a brand new Mi Box. Unfortunately, it had the same problem.

To rehash the issue. Not only does the remote disconnects frequently (requiring a resync), the bluetooth range appears to be quite limited. Around ~15 feet in my case. Past 15 feet, guarantee disconnect. While I agree 2.4 ghz interference could be an issue, none of my other Bluetooth devices have any issues. For example, if I plug in the new fire tv with voice stick, I have no issues with the fire tv remote.

As a test, I attempted to pair the fire tv remote to the mi box. No luck. I am unable to set the fire remote to a discovery mode. I tried holding the home button for 5-10 secs, the play/pause button for 5-10 secs. If the fire tv remote would have paired, my hope is to see if the Bluetooth disconnects would have be resolved.

I'll keep it around for a week in hopes there will be a software update, but if asked if asked my opinion for the Xiaomi Box, it's a no. I would not recommend the mi box at this time.

Tried doing a factory reset?

I returned mine just because of this. The improvements it provided over my Nexus Player were not good enough for me to keep it.

I've had this happen at least once, when the Mi Box had me re-pair the remote. Other times the box has become unresponsive, which I assume meant the system had crashed, although maybe it simply wasn't responding to the remote. My unit has exhibited a lot of bugs and is definitely a lemon.

I second the interference part, I've never had a problem with any other BT devices before but I've had this issue with my Mi Box as well. Turned out I had a shitty wireless camera that somehow would bork my whole wifi network occasionally. (took me a long time to figure that out, accidentally in fact) Ever since I unplugged that I've had zero issues with the remote not connecting; whereas a week ago it was like a 70/30 chance it would work without me having to unplug the damn thing and plug it back in. Just a thought anyway, might be a bitch to diagnose though.

My Nexus player would do this about every 2 weeks. On 6.0.1. Since upgrading to 7.0, it has not dropped once. Maybe it's just a software bug in 6.0.1?

Hey, fizban1, submitting this to the Mi Box team, will keep you guys posted once I hear back from them. Thanks!

Here's update number #2. I moved the Mi box to the bedroom and so far the remote works great. Voice recognition occurs without errors whereas before the remote would lose connection and google voice recognition would be terrible. As stated by youareme7 and straight_answers, I now believe there is a 2.4 ghz bluetooth inference occurring in my living room. (This is the first time I ever had a problem with Bluetooth in my living room.) I'll investigate and report back my findings.

Eliminate 2.4 GHz interference in your home.
