Well thats huge news. Thanks!
This is great news.
Now someone needs to build my ultimate AndroidTV cordcutter accessory: 2-4 tuners for HD TV and HD Radio (Live and DVR) with an easy way to flip back and forth between them using PiP. So for example, you could quickly switch between the audio of two or more sports games and/or a combination of TV and radio. Bonus if it can share recordings across the network.
This has to just be a trial run
3 tuners only, North America only.
Still good news
US only..."kicks table over"
Now if only the MiBox could get Nougat.
If anyone out there has a Nexus Player (that has been updated to Android TV 7.0 Nougat and the latest version of Live Channels) and one of the supported USB OTA TV tuners*, hopefully they can try this out and let us know how it works. Here are questions I'd love to see answered:
Does the updated Live Channels app by itself currently offer DVR functionality for OTA TV channels accessed via a supported USB tuner? My expectation was that this would not be the case as I thought Live Channels was only going to be able to expose DVR controls in its UI if there were a compatible underlying DVR app that was actually doing the DVR work. In other words, Live Channels would accept DVR commands from the user (record, schedule, play, pause, delete, etc.) only if it could pass those commands off to another app that actually executed the commands.
Where is guide data for the OTA TV channels accessed via the USB tuner coming from? Is Live Channels simply displaying the limited guide data that stations embed in their signal (PSIP data)? If so, that isn't really sufficient for scheduling future DVR recordings because PSIP data often does not extend beyond the current day. Or, on the other hand, is Google providing guide data for these TV channels? If so, how far out in advance is it offered -- 7 days? 14 days?
*supported USB tuners include (but may not be limited to) the following models:
So does this mean if Sling eventually works with live tv that we'll have DVR functionality? That would be amazing. If only they'd make it happen.
I know next to nothing about USB tuners, so I have a question:
If I were to hook one up to my cable wire and hook it up to my Nexus Player, would it then allow me to watch local TV through Android TV? Am I understanding this correctly, or am I completely off the mark?
Has anyone successfully tested this yet? If so, how was the experience?
HDHomeRun Connect would still be cheaper and easier to set up. They are still working on the DVR app but it will eventually come out. If you have Plex Pass then you don't even need the DVR app to record.
Whoa! Very nice!! I hope the Shield TV and Mi Box both get upgraded to Nougat soon so that these $50 OTA TV tuners can be used with them. That said, I wonder if there are any DVR software developers out there that are working to support these tuners? The only solutions I know of so far, HDHomeRun and Plex, only work with network tuners from Silicon Dust.
