Android 7 (Nougat) allows apps to utilize multiple Google user profiles however only the Nexus Player has Android 7 so far. I don't know if they've made any announcements but I would anticipate the Shield & Mi box to get updated to Android 7 since they have newer hardware. I have Nexus Player and the only app so far that utilizes this multiple Google profile feature is the YouTube app. I'm hoping once more devices have Android 7 there will be a push to extend this feature to other Google apps, Google Music in particular.
I think the add account button is for adding a new sign in for one of the apps. I'm assuming it's mimicking the add account from Android mobile seen here . As you can see from the list, not every app is doing login natively (i.e. I'm logged into Netflix), which is what the "Add Account" button supports. I'm guessing on your Mi Box, Vudu is the only app that supports it. Android TV is also Android, so it shares some of the same functionalities.
Doing some reading it sounds like Android TV didn't launch with the ability to register multiple users on the OS level, but there are several news posts talking about how that functionality has now been added, via an Add Account button in settings.
And it shows proper Android login screens, etc, on the screenshots provided by those sites. But that functionality does not appear to be there in my Mi Box.
