Do you guys know if the Xfinity TV app works on the Shield? I am normally a Roku user just for ease of use and the wife likes it, but I am paying almost $30 a month for my cable box etc. The Shield seems great, and if the app works I think it could be a great addition. Just want it to be simple without rooting the device and all that. Is it standard download like on my Android phone?
The new TV app doesn't; it won't load. The old app (GO) does work.
It does work, but not without problems.
First, you'll have to sideload it. No root required, but you'll have to download the APK and install it on your Shield manually.
Second, you'll want to use a remote mouse/touchpad with your Shield, because the app is practically impossible to navigate without one, and trying to use the Shield gamepad as a mouse is particularly frustrating with the Xfinity app (there's a lot of scrolling involved).
For the most part, the app works well enough to meet my wife's approval, despite the occasional crash or odd behaviour (e.g., launch the Xfinity app and some other sideloaded app opens instead).
It's doable, but it won't be as good an experience than on your Roku.
Comcast employee here. The Xfinity app does not currently work on the Shield.
You can hold on to that Roku, because we're due to release an app for Roku in the near future.
Seems odd that Comcast chose to port their X1-looking Xfinity TV app to the Nvidia Shield Android TV and publicly demo it back in May if they don't actually have plans to release it. Sadly Comcast is giving no support whatsoever to Android TV. They actually actively block casting in their app and using cable channel apps. I bought an HDHomeRun so I could watch live TV on my shield and not have to pay for their cable boxes.
