Mi Box 4K (Walmart) - Netflix errors after playing for about 10 seconds

by pudds

Has anyone seen this before and/or found a resolution?

I'm able to start playing a video, but at around the 10-12 second mark (possibly when it's moving up to a higher bitrate?), the playback stops and I get the following error:

"We're having trouble playing this title right now". I get "Go Back" and "Details" buttons. In Details, there's nothing useful, just serial/model numbers, and a connectivity test which passes across the board. There's no error code that I can see anywhere.

I've tried several titles, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and made a change in my router (I was blocking external DNS requests previously, I turned that off) - nothing has worked. I'm able to watch the same videos on my smart TV without issue. I do have a 4k TV, but my netflix account is not set up for 4k, since there aren't enough titles to really justify the extra price.

There's only one thing I can think of that could be an issue - I'm not using the HDMI cable that came with the box. The cable I'm using is a high quality monoprice one, but it is a few years old, so I guess if this is how an HDCP error manifests itself, it could be the issue. I can change it out if necessary, but it's run through the wall so I'd prefer not to if possible.

If anyone else has run into this or has any suggestions, I'd love to hear your thoughts before I pull the TV off the wall and start fishing HDMI cables again.

In the last two days, this is happening consistently on both of our Mi Box devices after working perfectly for about two weeks.

This is very frustrating. I called Netflix technical support and had a member of their support team trying to tell me that 1) Netflix actually "streams" content versus preload like all of the other providers (bullshit) and 2) that Netflix doesn't build their app for Android TV -- they are just a website -- Android builds the app (also complete bullshit).

I wish I could see some log files or something more specific than "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title"

I am going to try a factory reset. We will see what happens.

I was having the same issue. A factory reset solved it.

This happens all the time on my Shield and Mi Box. Either netflix has serious server issues lately or their android tv app is borked.

I restart my mi box and it'll work again. Annoying though.

Same issue here, stops after a few seconds more times than it runs smoothly. Very frustrating! Hoping Walmart will take it back...

I am also having similar issues. Funny thing is, I side loaded the tablet version and it worked fine. There are a couple of things I am currently wondering...

Although I bought the device in the US, I am streaming with it in Canada. Wonder if Netflix is getting confused with my Canadian IP.

Since the TV app is supposed to stream in higher quality, Netflix is pickier on the device it runs on and checks DRM, which may even run as deep as the HDMI connection. I.e. if a well negotiated connection with the TV is not established, it drops the stream. I'll be able to test this soon.

Factory reset did nothing for me.

Any other insights?

Edit: Plugged it into a newer Sony bravia TV and watched for hours with no interruptions. The problem seems to related to dhcp handshaking (at least for me).

The setup that was NOT working: Mi Box Plugged into Denon AVR-3311ci, Denon AV-3311ci Plugged into Sharp Aquos older non 4k led TV.

I'll try updating the amp's and TVs firmware one of these days and report back
