Mi Box and HDHomerun Connect Video Quality Issues

by eightbitrob

Recently picked up a Mi Box for my bedroom. (Currently have Shield TV in the living room an love the thing). For the most part the thing works great but I'm having some issues with my HD Homerun and was wondering if anyone is having the same issues or a solution.

My problem is that some channels just look way pixelated and other don't. Using Live Channels I will actually get the SD logo on those pixelated channels even though they are the HD feed. The channels that look awful are CBS and NBC. My guess is it is something to due with the deinterlacing since CBS and NBC broadcast in 1080i. If I watch FOX or ABC (which broadcast 720p) picture quality is perfect. Anyone have these issues? It's definitely not my Homerun box because all channels look fantastic through my shield TV.

try install InstaTV, which also acts as Live Channel plugin. It has multipole HW decoding options. Not sure which one would work on MiTV.

I have an HDhomerun PRIME and was experiencing issues. Not exactly like yours, but I was getting a lot of freezing and tearing. This was happening on my wired SHIELD and my wireless Mi Box could barely play anything in the bedroom. I spent weeks trying to tweak my HDhomerun thinking it was the problem. Everything else seemed to run just fine on my network. I finally got around to upgrading my router this week and everything is perfect. Crystal clear quality even in the bedroom upstairs.

Again, not the same issues or equipment as you, but I would definitely look into the router as a possible culprit as well.

By the way, I got a Tenda AC15. You can pick one up for $50 here: Microcenter- Tenda AC15

I think this is an issue with the mpeg2 hw decoder on the mi box. Might need to wait for an update since its so new.

I have a HDhomerun extend in which I had the same issue as you. I never had a problem with my HTPC or fire box. Once I switched the Mi box over to to wired the image cleared up.

That tenda ac15 looks like a knockoff Asus ac1900.

Have you tried using Kodi? When adding it in Videos, add it as a UPnP device. No channel guide, just basic channels, like files in a folder.

Yes, the 1080i channels definitely don't look as good as the 720p channels. And yes, it's most likely due to the MPEG-2 decoder.

I don't think it looks as bad as "SD Quality" though, but it's not as good as it could be.

The MiBox is fine for secondary sets where you just want to get content on, but I wouldn't use it for my primary setup.
