Replacing other smart-TV os with Android TV?

by drunkenvalley

I assume the answer is "no" as it stands, but I'll ask anyway to confirm: Can you in some fashion replace webOS or Tizen with Android TV?

I'm looking for a new TV for a friend of mine, and after I bought a new TV recently with AndroidTV I'm honestly convinced it's the way to go. However, our selection of TVs in Norway isn't exactly amazing. Sony have a pretty small share, and the data I picked up on Philips TV didn't paint a very good picture of their quality.

Long story short, LG and Samsung have shittons of options here, but they all run webOS and Tizen respectively. If possible, I'd like to run Android TV, as it seems the option that should have better support long-term...

If you can't find a real AndroidTV, you're better off finding the least "smart" TV (so it "boots" fast), and using an Android TV STB (eg. Nvidia Shield) that sleeps sipping very little power and wakes up instantly.

It doesn't work like that.

And just buy a TV for its picture quality. You can hook up anything you want to it. In a couple years, you won't want to buy a new TV if you want a change in OS.
