This happened to my Shield when I originally got it. However the restarts and turning off only happened after my device would completely lock up. I also had extreme graphical issues where everything was all distorted and looked pixelated.
Sounds hardware related and I would replace it if it's under warranty.
I contacted Nvidia through their live chat, explained my issues and after determining that it was hardware related, all I had to do was provide them with my order invoice and a picture of the serial number located on the side of the Shield box and they shipped me a replacement Shield through FedEx within 24 hours.
They even included a prepaid shipping label to send the faulty one back, so I didn't have to pay anything.
My replacement Shield (that I've had for 11 months now), has NEVER had a single issue with restarting randomly or freezing up. So I would definitely contact them and get a replacement. Yours sounds faulty.
Never. If it still under warranty, I would call them asap. They are pretty good at responding.
