Shield TV Owners, how responsive is your interface?

by mr_yuk

I suspect that my Shield TV may have a problem. The interface is always pretty laggy and I have been troubleshooting playback issues in Plex and Kodi for months.

Below is a summary of my experience, can you tell me if this is consistent with yours?

  • Boot - swirly logo plays for 30-45 sec, leanback screen appears and another 15-30 seconds before icons appear, navigation is laggy for first 30 seconds or so
  • Loading app - Google apps take 20-40 sec to load often showing a background image for a while before any icons or menu items. Navigation is laggy for a while after app loads.
  • Closing app - some apps take quite some time before they fully shut down and return to the leanback screen. The fastest is about 10 sec and the slowest around 40 sec.
  • Navigation lags for a few seconds occasionally even after it has caught up.

Thanks!

[UPDATE] My Shield TV is now completely dead. Green power light comes on but no video. I tried doing the USB/power on/hold button reset and it didnt work. NVIDIA has me doing some long idle test (unplug HDMI, plug controller via USB, power on, press A every few sec for 5 min then let it sit for 15-20min, then try HDMI to see if any video). We'll see if that helps.

[Update2] NVIDIA is replacing my Shield Pro even though it is past the warranty period. I have to say that I am very happy with their support!

[Update3] New Shield TV arrived it is much faster than the old one. There was definitely something wrong with the old unit. No noticeable lag at all now. Extremely happy now!

Nowhere near that bad for me.

Boot maybe takes quite a while, but after that it's fairly snappy.

The Shield TV is the best ( THE BEST ) device running Android (Android TV actually) that I've ever used. It's right up there with my Pixel XL.

So something is very wrong with yours. Do you use a microSD card as adopted storage?

Not at all that laggy/slow here.

The only thing that takes time, is the recommendation notifications take time to load, or sometimes crap out and don't load at all from boot. This happens on my SHIELD and Nexus Players though.

Even though, when loading or not loaded - I can still move around and browse/use apps and responsiveness is as it should be (obviously a lot faster on the SHIELD than the Nexus Players).

Either there's a problem with your device HW/SW wise (factory reset might help if SW), or an app you have loaded taking up resources in the background (Kodi? With lots of add-ons possibly?), or an internet connection problem (especially possible if Wi-Fi).

Um, I haven't times how long it takes to start up, but the apps show up instantly with recommendations following 10 seconds later. Opening apps is pretty fast, GPM and Google Play Store open in a second, Netflix opens instantly and loads for 5 to 10 seconds before I can choose an account (but it does that on all devices except for the Windows 10 app). Shutting apps down is almost instant as well. Have you tried factory resetting your box?
