As a Chinese, I'd say don't expect updates delivered to this product very fast.
Xiaomi's software update speed is not slow in China. In fact, they statrted as a ROM company followed by phones. MIUI has been considered one of the best localized android roms in China. However, this Mi box US version runs totally different software from its Chinese version, and I don't see incentives for them to even provide a single update. I have heard somewhere that Nougot would be coming, but please it seems the mi box 3 enhanced version, which is the latest version of mi box sold in China and has better hardware specs than the us version, is still running 5.1. I believe that android boxes in china is a much much larger market than android tv in the us.
Hopefully we'll get it, but I don't think it would be very soon.
FWIW, I asked their support about Android TV 7.0 which supports multiple google accounts, they said they have no plan to push any update at the moment.
They will likely be a little bit better (than they normally are) about minor updates since they wish to remain on Google's good side, and thus able to make future certified Android TV hardware.
But...
Xaiomi tends to not provide software support on the same level as say ASUS/Google, Nvidia, or even Razor (depending on how you look at it). Their other Android products (mainly phones) are fairly nice, get released, then get forgotten.
So hopefully not that bad, but don't hold your breath for Android 7 :/
They generally don't update their products very fast, most aren't made for the United States either. I think we will get a update but I wouldn't expect it anytime before next year. I really would like HDR to be working ARGGGGGG
This is their first device in America but not their first device ever.
I'd expect them to update on a schedule similar to NVIDIA. The Shield is about 4 months behind Android releases. I have no clue how much of that is involved with converting features from Android to Android TV.
hopefully very soon. i have a Mi band 2 and a Yi camera and they both receive very regular updates.
Android TV 7.0 has been released by Google and is now available for their Nexus Player. Given that the Mi Box runs stock Android TV (with only a single extra row of "Mi Recommended" apps in the home screen UI), I don't know what the hold-up might be to get it deployed. Meanwhile, the box that Mi Box is packaged in states that it can run HDR video and it can't, not until it gets updated.
