I have sideloaded Amazon Instant video using the APK from apkmirror ( http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/amazon-mobile-llc/amazon-instant-video-for-android-tv/ ) and ES File Explorer.
So far, I seem to be able to login, browse, play trailers, but when I try to actually play TV Shows or Movies, I get a playback error. Has anyone been able to get this to work?

It's expected that Amazon (and maybe others like Staples, Best Buy, etc.) will sell the new more powerful Amazon Fire TV Stick for $30 on Black Friday. It comes with a voice remote but can't do 4K UHD (only 1080p HD). That may be your cheapest route to having a device you can rely on specifically for Amazon Prime Video. Also note that the new live streaming TV service DirecTV Now will be launching on Nov. 28 and they'll give you a Fire TV Stick for free with payment of the first month of service, which costs $35, and can be cancelled at any time.
