Nexus Player vs Shield for Live TV

by CPT_Kangaroo

I already have a Shield, and since the last update fixed the interlacing issues with live tv I think it is pretty much perfect. I have been using the HDHR Prime and have no DRM so I am not deterred by that.

I am able to get a couple Nexus Players (cheap) and was wondering if these perform as well as the Shield does in this respect. I also have a Mi Box but between the interlacing and the Plex not working well I am thinking the nexus player might be a good stop gap until that either gets updated or a new Shield comes along.

Just looking for insight.

Thanks!

NP is better than its price suggests but not anywhere close to the Shield in terms of its performance. I would say for most things, the NP will do fine. It'll have lags/studders, and might have trouble with higher bitrate stuff, but it works fine. The Shield is something you buy to get as close to perfection as possible.

So I would advise you not even try to compare these two with each other.

If you have an AC router the Nexus Player should be fine as wireless AC has enough bandwidth for Live TV, If you will need ethernet I would get the Shield. I have both the Nexus Player and the shield and use both for Live TV on an HDHR Prime. They both work great. I have 802.11 AC though.

I have both. Obviously the Shield is no comparison. I have a USB OTG Ethernet adapter for the Nexus Player and with it wired it really handles video nicely. I used to use it with the HDHomerun with no problems and now use it for PlayStation Vue, Plex and Netflix. For a second or third TV and a cheap option it has performed quite well for me. Not sure about your interlacing question though.

Im running on two nexus players... thinking of getting a shield for 4k/gigabit Ethernet soon, but as of now am happy with what i get out of the NP. Plex runs great, i usually stream 720p mkvs but i have not had issue with 1080, i just prefer to download the 720, bandwidth reasons. As far as live TV, i cant comment, as i use just a direct OTA antenna with coax splitter for my TVs. But sometimes i stream some HD IPTV sources and have had no trouble with anything i throw at it.

Ended up getting a Nexus Player and started using it. Plex works perfect. LiveTV thru HDHR Prime is as good as the Shield was before the last update. Got some interlacing issues but it is perfectly acceptable. Thank you all for the input.

I guess I just need and ADT-1 and I will have all the AndroidTV boxes that are worth a damn.
