I've successfully used CyberGhost VPN on the Mi Box to stream some local NBC content on Sling. This VPN works as an app, not by configuring the device's network settings.
It's crashing for me too. Would like to know how did you fix this? Also the Settings crash when I try to use/mount a USB drive.
Are you downloading pirated content or torrenting ? If not VPN is a waste. To change DNS change it on the router so it goes to all your devices.
I would turn on your vpn at your router or some other network device on your network first. I dont think the MI BOX will have enough compute power to run any VPN apps sufficiently plus using streaming apps.
