Right now I have my main PC (that I use for gaming, watching movies, etc) set up as my Plex Media Server. I own an Nvidia Shield 16g that I use in the other room to watch videos from my Plex library. Right now, I can't set up my home PC to wake on lan because my desktop is using wifi and that's sucking a lot of power. I have a 4tb external drive that I don't use right now and I was thinking about making that adoptive storage for my sheid and moving all of my media to it from my main PC. I would then manually add new videos from my main PC to my Nvidia Shield over the network and then have the Plex server running from the Nvidia Shield.
The people over at /r/Plex recommended that I post here. Someone mentioned that I couldn't back up metadata or add movie thumbnails, is that true? Are there any issues with my newly proposed setup?
I know that there are some things you can't do on a Shield that you can do on a computer (adding PlexPy for example) Not really sure what "back up metadata" means. Do you mean to back it up in case of a crash? If so, I think you should be able to get Trakt.tv in there, it's a better way to back up things anyway.
You may be able to add thumbnails if you root your device, but it's probably not worth the trouble.
EDIT: I think that the biggest drawback of using the Shield as your server is that you can only have 2, maybe 3 simultaneous streams going.
