Debating on whether to bite the bullet and buy a shield now, or wait for the possibility of a new one being announced. Thoughts?

I should add that I've had a Nexus Player since they launched but have come to realize that it sucks

fudsak

I updated from a Nexus Player during the 2015 Black Friday sale and never looked back, it's definitely a huge performance upgrade.

There is some speculation that the new Shield TV would be announced in January @ CES: link

It doesn't look like there are many huge changes, so if you find a good price now, I would say go for it. It's possible that alongside the hardware refresh they may reduce price, though.

Here's how I thought about it, the current version of the shield could possibly only get one more android release before it's deprecated. I'm sure it's blazing fast but I got a Mi box to tide me over, if they have a new one with anything that entises me I'll maybe get it next year. I'm mostly really hoping google has more to come with ATV, still could use some work

Montajd

I'm thinking about getting one from Best Buy, since I can return it through 01/15/2017, CES is the 5th-7th, boom

It's been kind of hard to find a Shield the last couple of months, and the secondary market has grossly inflated prices. You might want to just wait, and make do with your Nexus for now.

If you can find a Shield at a reasonable price, I'd say go for it.

It took you a long time :)

I don't think it sucks. Still suitable for casual streaming. At 50$ it certainly couldn't be beaten.

At least wait until CES in January.

Bodycount9

Me personally I would wait. $199 is a lot to spend when something better and for the same price could be around the corner. If it was priced like the Mi Box then I'd just buy one now.

Mi Box does almost the same thing. Buy one of those now and then buy the new shield next year and use the Mi box on another TV.

For 200 bucks i can buy a ps4 slim or xbox one when it is on sale. Hard core gaming: check Casual streaming: check Live tv: check Dvd and bluray play back:, check Remote control istead of game controllers: check Xbox one can skype too.

Andrroid

With black friday having come and gone and CES less than a month away, I would wait.

Montajd

Decided I'd take yall's advice and hold off. Hopefully it will be worth the wait

morpheousmarty

I'm waiting. I wish I had bought one when they came out (didn't expect nVidia to give such good support), but at this point, it just a very good Android TV, not something that should be within spitting distance of a PS4 or marginally more funcional than the Linux toys like the raspberry PI.

You likely have some device that you can use as a better streaming solution now until a real successor for the shield comes out (a laptop, a chromecast with localcast, maybe even an old phone with HDMI output).

If the Shield is on sale for $150 on day, it makes a lot more sense, but for 200 you're basically paying full price to be a step behind.

tone_capone

Why does it suck?

If you aren't using it for high powered gaming and can tolerate it for a few more months id stick with it to see what the new SHIELD looks like.

You can also see if yo can get a good deal on a used SHIELD. I got my 500gb Pro for $100!

aonysllo

wait.
