(xpost from /r/corcutters) Current State of the HDHomerun Prime? (/ What are android TVs like)

by SurfaceBeneath

Looking at picking up a new TV... and have been tempted by the HDHomerun Prime.

Have a roku... but doesn't look like it supports viewing live HDHomerun Prime streams... the plex support is kind of "sketchy" as well.

Andriod TVs look to support the HDHomerun app... but looking at the play store I see one app not being available in the US... the other being a beta app.

Am I missing something... looking at the wrong app?

Also what is the general "android TV" experience like.

The Beta app works just fine. It's mostly a beta because it's being used for the DVR functionality

Most people don't actually use the app. Instead they simply use it as a source for the live channels app which is built into Android TV

Current user of the HDHR Prime here. I use the prime to stream most (not all) comcast channels. I also use a TV tuner in a computer to DVR OTA channels. I can also integrate the Prime streams into the computer using MythTV or something similar. Then I interface with the computer using kodi.

IMO if you live in a decent city, you should be able to get a fair amount of OTA for free.

All I can say is this: Wireless vs Wired.

If you can, ALWAYS GO WIRED. The quality and stability will be a lot lot lot better.

The Prime uses a cable card from your cable company. You'll want to look into if your provider tags the channels with DRM or not. If it does, the Prime will not likely work with Android TV. Only WMC or Tivo, I believe.

The Homerun Connect or Extend will work with OTA signals and work just fine.

The green icon VIEW app was removed from the store, because Android N broke DRM playback and they had to rewrite the app anyway for DVR support. The gray icon (beta) VIEW app is still beta only because it doesn't yet support DRM and the DVR software has not yet been officially released. It does everything the green app did, except for DRM.

There is a third party app named InstaTV also works with Channel app.

Confusing based on everything I've read. I have one with a Comcast cablecard and WMC implementation. Comcast shifted a codec and jacked it all up and every other implementation seems to be really vague and reading over all of the comments left here for you it doesn't seem like that has changed. There is seriously not one 1. Do this. 2. Do that. 3. Do this. 4. Watch TV level guide that I can find. It's frustrating. The only reason I still have it is because Comcast doesn't seem to want to support Cablecards anymore and I'm scared that if I send the one I have back I won't be able to get another one. It's just not worth my time anymore ultimately. Not until I know exactly how to implement the tech necessary to make it work without a day or three worth of Googling.
