You can also map your TV commands like FF and RW to your Android TV activity. These functions tend to be missing on Android TV remotes but work thanks to the magic of HDMI CEC.

I control mine via IR, can launch apps and even play certain games with the remote if I really wanted to. Don't see much of a reason to game with a remote when I have controllers around though
I have used my Harmony remote on both the Shield and and MiBox with no issues! Highly recommended!
i control my mibox via BT with my harmony hub. i just added it as a nexus player and find BT more responsive than IR. have not tried to see if it supports launching apps directly...
I use a harmony hub/remote with my shield tv and it's wonderful. I'm confident it would work with a mi box as well.
To my knowledge, you can't launch specific apps with the remote, though with another service like IFTTT it could maybe be accomplished. I honestly never looked into it. I just love the ability to use one remote (or the ios Harmony app) to control all the devices in my living room set up.
