That's because it's not supported yet.
Waiting on vp9 support. It's coming though.
I didn't think the Nexus Player supported 4k either, but I get the option to rent the UHD movies.
It's not supported on the Shield at this point, as the Shield doesn't support part of the codec they use. Nvidia has been saying they are going to issue a software patch to get it running (most likely by using the GPU to run the codec).
