A friend of mine has one of those non-androidTV android boxes that has a standard 4.4 launcher, is the ATV Launcher compatible with 4.4 and if not is there a simple launcher I could set up for them since they aren't too tech savy?

You can sideload Leanback on some devices, but I think it requires 5.1 at a minimum. There are alternatives, though. Take a look at HALauncher and TV Launcher in the Play Store.

Unfortunately, this is not possible. However, you can install HAL launcher from the Play Store for a similar experience.
