As stated in title, is there a way to do this? I know you can from sleep, but I can't seem to figure out how to power on without getting up and physically touching the power button on the system. Any other way of doing this?

I never turn mine completely off, just sleep, which the remotes can turn back on no problem. With hdmi-cec it also turns on my tv which is awesome (my soundbar just stays on all the time).
I have to turn on my TV power, then go to the input, which turns on my shield. .... doesn't do it automatic.
But, ya, you shouldn't' need to ever physically hit that power button.
I always find it weird when I hear people turning off stuff. I guess it's just me, but I haven't turned my shield off since I got it over a year ago, or my roku, or my fire tv.
Is it to save power? The amount of power used while in sleep mode is very small.
Yea you can, i do it all the time. Keep in mind your tv has to have CEC built in to be able to accomplish this. Older TVs will not be able to do this which is why you are seeing mixed responses.
Plug the shield into a WeMo smart switch (or similar) then you can cycle power through the app from your phone.
I've been able to turn it on from power off by holding the voice button on the small remote
Why do you even turn it off in the first place?
Mine is working. I've a Panasonic plasma TV, maybe is something related to your TV set.
As far as I know, no you can't.
The remote connects to the Shield through bluetooth. If your Shield is completely turned off (not just in sleep), then there would be no way for the remote to interact with the Shield. Same goes for the controller (which uses a wifi-direct connection).
