How to close an app

by Ausernameneeded

Is there an easy shortcut or an app that can close an app on Android TV?

For example, if I am watching TV on Vue and want to stop it, how do I do it without going into settings or starting a new app? Right now if I hit the desktop button the video plays in the background. I love that feature up until I want to quit the app. I was hoping I could just hold a button down while the app was selected and click close... but that doesn't seem possible.

Edit: I was referring to using settings and go to app and go to force close. However it seems that by just entering settings closes the app. I don't think it does, but just to confirm, the streaming video isn't going on in the background, is it?

I believe once you go into another app (including settings, just not launcher) any playing video stops.

I think it you hold the home button it shows you the open apps and you can close it from there. That's how it works on my Nexus Player at least.

Settings -> Apps -> app you want to stop -> Force Stop

On the Shield remote, you can just double-tap the middle of the volume slider to play/pause

If you're going to to use your device for another app, just open the next app and that will stop the stream. If you're done watching, turn it off. That's going to stop PlayStation Vue as well.

If using the nexus player running Android TV 7.0 (may also work on other Android TV's running 7.0 too, not sure) while the app you want to close is open, hold down the home button on the remote (circle button below the back and play/pause buttons), and you will go into card view (similar to phones). Scroll to the app you want to close and hit "dismiss". This will close the selected app.

This is the only way to actually close Playstation Vue other than opening another app as pressing the back button a million times never prompts you to close the app unlike most android apps. I found this completely by accident.

Edit: It appears this was answered above - Since it doesn't look like the Mi Box has Android 7.0 yet (?) it looks like you won't have this feature until you get it. Bummer.
