The Nvidia Spot is very interesting and a total left field surprise.
Basically it's an extension to the google assistant that you can plug into a socket, about the size of those plugin air freshners. Looks like Google Home finally has an equivalent to the echo dot. Really looking forward to putting one in each room!
Holy fuck. Just pre ordered. Amazon Prime sold me. I already have a Shield, Nexus Player, a few MI Boxes. Gonna sell all them and get a few of these. This is the best streamer made.
Release Day Delivery: Monday, Jan. 16 FREE Two-Day Shipping

So I guess it's official. Any idea if the original Shield will get the app too?
Serious question: What makes this worth $199? I would assume it is geared more towards people who play games.
I stream Netflix, Hulu, and Kodi primarily. My Mi Box and Fire Box work just fine. I would like to have Prime Video on my Mi Box, but it's not worth the extra $130+ for that.
New controller looks dope & I wonder if they fixed the battery life on the remote? AND do they work on the OG shield? If so I'll be picking them up separately 👌
Well, the new Shield TV comes with Amazon Video and it also has Google Assistant. But apparently not Dolby Vision, only regular HDR10, since there was no mention of it in the Nvidia CES keynote. Wonder if it will have Android TV 7.0 out of the gate?
Looks like this is the base model. They have not mentioned which Tegra it has. Hopefully the Keynote mentions it soon.
what processor?
Any ideas on when the Spots will be available for preorder?
So, aside from the new controller; what are the drivers for current SATV owners to "upgrade" to the new SATV?
Looks like it's the same Tegra X1 with 3GB of RAM. Smaller form factor for the non Pro.
I wish DirecTV Now supported Android TV. Tempted in buying the Amazon Fire TV stick for DirecTV Now and Nvidia Shield TV for other applications. that way I get the best of both.
I preordered the regular last night, and upon further reading, looks like the regular shield tv is gimped without microsd and IR. Wondering if the Pro is worth the extra $100. Currently, I have the Harmony 650 and looks like it wont work with the regular shield. I could upgrade to the Harmony Elite to tie everything together, since I just got the Mi Box for my bedroom and the Shield for the living room.
Basically, my question is either upgrade to the Shield Pro, or get the regular shield and get the Harmony Elite to tie all my bedroom and living together?
It shows the remotes now having an IR blaster for volume control / TV power on/off. I know these two items were the most pesky with CEC and now this should get them out of the way / backward compatible with older TV's.
The exclusive apps - Amazon Video and Steam - are a bit frustrating. The latter is more understandable, since I'd imagine implementing hardware decoding and controller compatibility for Steam streaming on other hardware could be finicky. I don't get the Amazon Video exclusivity unless it has to do with supporting a specific type of encryption they use. Is it generally assumed that nVidia is paying Amazon for it? It just seems like unnecessary platform fragmentation for Android TV.
Fair enough - I'm a little biased, I bought 3 Nexus Players on sale for about $60-70 CAD a piece in late 2015, and I've been pretty satisfied with them for the most part - a few hard resets, a couple missing apps, but in general good performance.
I'll keep an eye out on Prime Day and other sales - if the price is right I may grab one. Or I may grab an old model
I pre-ordered one. I don't game a ton on my TV, but all we have right now is a Nexus Player and a 1st Generation Chromecast. I'm thinking we'll retire the Chromecast and move the Nexus Player to the bedroom, and let the Shield TV be the living room hub. Can't wait!
so only the shield pro shows an IR receiver (compatible with Harmony Remote) on the spec sheet. So can we not use the harmony hub on the $199 shield or did I just overlook something.
Spot looks like it is going to be $50 each, hopefully there will be deals for multiples: http://www.androidcentral.com/nvidia-spot-announced
Do we have any idea if old controllers will work with a new unit, or vice versa?
Ughh, at 289.99 for the base model and $399.99 for the pro in Canada, this is getting close to the price of building an HTPC.
bummer was finally hoping for affordable, sticking with the mi box.
Looks like there will be a Steam app too, so it can act like a Steam Link. Badass.
