I currently don't pay for cable. I'm thinking about getting a HDHomeRun prime (I currently just have a regular HDHomeRun, but assuming I need prime for the cable card?). I plan on purchasing a cable TV package through Mediacom, so I can have some channels to flip through (more importantly, so my kid will have Disney Junior!). I've read that channels such as HBO and Showtime won't work - which is fine - but will the majority of channels work with this then? I use PLEX for 99% of what I watch - but I'd like to have everything go through an Android TV setup, so I don't need to keep switching inputs.
Will the "Live TV" show all of my channels as long as I'm paying for cable card access?
The answer to your question is "it depends". The major problem is that there's no DVR software for Android that supports CableCard DRM (in fact, there's little software for any platform that does - AFAIK, the only thing that does is Windows Media Center, which is all but discontinued). SiliconDust has been saying that HDHomeRun DVR will support this eventually, but until it does, you're at your cable company's mercy as to what channels you can pull, and every cable company is different in this regard. Some companies will not DRM any channel, some of them will only DRM premiums, some of them will DRM anything that's part of an add-on package, some of them will DRM everything except local channels. It's not even consistent with a particular provider; local franchises often have their own rules.
