Don't get a Mi Box -- too many reports of problems, and the support is terrible.

by zopiro

First of all, if you got a Mi Box and it's working fine, congratulations. You're one of the lucky ones. Now take a moment to search around here and in other forums and you'll find many of us who're facing the following issues:

  • Unexplained, random Wi-Fi drops

  • Unexplained, random remote disconnects

  • Frame drops on Netflix and Kodi

As for support, it's a complete joke. They've done nothing but replied telling me to do the default procecures (reset, reboot, etc), and once it didn't solve, they asked me to return the product to the source of purchase (which I would have already done, but I bought this from the US yet live abroad).

So, if I were you, I would not risk getting a Mi Box, even though it's cheap. You get what you pay for. Go for the Shield.

EDIT: If you're not able to notice frame drops that doesn't mean they aren't there. Some people just don't notice them. To those of us who do, it's a real, annoying problem. So, before you start accusing us of being "drama queens", consider for a second that maybe you're the one with an untrained eye and low quality standards.

EDIT2: We're not talking about the Mi Box lacking some features. We're talking about malfunction . It's a 2016 device that can't do something that a 2006 device - a WDTV Live Plus - could do without any problems. It can't play 1080p without frame drops! I mean no offense when I say that some of you simply don't notice the frame drops, but geez, what a bunch of narcissists taking everything personally.

Also anecdotally, the two Mi Boxes I set up have been performing awesome, one of them almost since launch. I highly recommend this product. Shield is three times the price but I don't need all its features.

RustyPainter

I've had 0 issues with my Mi Box.

Sorry you've had issues.

runout

I love mine, had some HDMI CEC issue, have them all sorted now.

Did you have an actual question????

Try to sell that sob story to the early adopters of the Shield and Nvidia Player, most of whom suffered significant growing pains.
This Xiaomi Mi Box has only been shipping since November 2016.

Certainly an update to Nougat would be welcome, and will ultimately show up much sooner than expected.

Granted, the India based support staff leaves much to be desired.

That's why this forum is such a great resource. Give it a try and get off your soapbox.

glassbase86

I have 3 and my brother has 1 and we have no issues.

Wow. So right. If I am happy with my purchase, it must mean something is wrong with me.

No, seriously, I haven't used mine much, but I also haven't noticed a problem. Doesn't mean it's perfect. Doesn't mean I won't have a problem in the future, but I'm happy so far. Sure, a Shield TV would have been better, but I wasn't in the market for a Shield TV. I was in the market for a 4K Chromecast. For the same price, I got an Android TV.

Now the joke is still on me, because the whole reason for the Chromecast was because I was excited about the new Google Home integrations, and it seems those work much better with an actual Chromecast than they do with my MiBox, but I hope that will change. In the mean time, I can still Cast from my phone, and, while I wait for my gamepad to arrive, play Badlands with the remote, which looks fantastic on the big screen. More games to come. Which wouldn't have been possible with 4K Chromecast.

So, yeah, for more than twice the money, I could have gotten something better. That's usually how it works. But for the money I was willing to spend, I got my desired Chromecast ability and more features. Sorry you are disappointed in your purchase and learned the hard way that the MiBox isn't quite the same as the Shield that costs more and has more impressive specs. And sorry that I am somehow defective for being happy with my purchase. Enjoy your Shield.

I see a lot of people contradicting you and that's cool, I myself have 2 and for the most basic of use cases I guess it's ok but tax it at all with Live TV via HDHomerun and it is pretty crappy. I have one on wifi which the LiveTV isn't reliable tho not exactly the Mi Boxes fault but I also have one on ethernet which gives me trouble too. I have to set the ethernet connected one to never sleep otherwise the ethernet won't reconnect unless I unplug it. I've had to reset it while watching netflix because it froze too. I had a remote that kept disconnecting until I swapped the unit. I have barely any apps.

TL:DR I'm with you it's not great, but it at the price it's fine to replace a chromecast

Bought 3, all work fine. Dont know why you are upset over it by blasting such a negative post about it.

GldRush98
  • I've had one since launch day. Zero wifi drops, connected on 5ghz just fine.
  • Zero remote disconnect issues
  • I do not use Netflix or Kodi so I can't speak to those. I run Plex which is my personal Netflix, and I did install Kodi, but was entirely unimpressed with the clunkiness of its interface. It didn't stay installed for more than 10 minutes. I can't understand the advantage to it over Plex for my set up.
  • I used Plex 75% of the time and Youtube the other 25% of the time, with random other apps played with every once in a while.

According to my PlexPy stat tracker, I have used my Mi Box to play 142 videos. Of those, I think I had maybe 3 files that did not play properly. When I switched to casting Plex on my Chromecast, those did play properly... they were also all in the same show, so I can't say for certain whether it was the Plex app, something with the way that show was encoded, or the Mi Box itself. However, that is a hair over a 2% failure to play rate. I've thrown all kinds of stuff at it, so all in all, not bad I'd say.

Youtube usually works fine, but I have seen an audio drop out issue a handful of times. A reboot always clears it up (My Mi Box is set to only go in to standby, never power off, so it only ever gets rebooted when I manually tell it to).

Yes, it is cheap, but in my experience, it works very well. I see no reason to buy a shield at this point to maybe or maybe not fix a 2% playback issue in my use case.

Mbanicek64

Have one. It is fine.

Ausernameneeded

I'm another user that hasn't had any of those issues or any other issue.

Hope the op figure it out or find something that works in their setup.

JBMacGill

I got it for my mom for use on her 1080p TV and she loves it and hasn't complained about any problems. Also, I haven't noticed any dropped frames or slow down while using it with either Netflix or Youtube. I haven't installed Kodi on it yet though.

evalalave

again with the drama queens. i have had mine for 2 of the 3 months its been out and excluding some minor hiccups its been great. i've got it connected to a soundbar and a 4K tv and have had no problems what so ever from Kodi, Netflix, Youtube or Archos (SMB local videos).

If you want to buy a Shield - all the power to you. The rest of us who are actually very happy with the Mi Box will continue to use it.

rsnn

The only issue I have is youtube @60fps. Netflix, remote, wifi and the rest works perfectly.

maresateoats

If it could handle YouTube at 60fps I'd be aok with it. I have to go to 480 for some videos which sucks. Other then that I've no issues. But the new shield is tempting!

yummyluckycharms

My family and friends have about 5 mi boxes between us - no problems at all. Thing is a dream come true and I can't help but feel pity for the people that overpaid for the nvidia.

Op: if everyone is doing fine except for you, chances are the problem lies with you - not the box

defconoi

This will be the first and last Xioami product I buy, I rarely have problems but the lack of communication from support to those that need it is appalling. They also need more community updates and public acknowledgement of issues.

Almightyderek

I've had Mi box since launch and I'm mostly happy. The adoptive storage is my biggest complaint. I've never had any problems with Netflix frame drops. Netflix sometimes gives me errors. But my nexus player did as well. I've also had my remote lose connection a few times but my 2 nexus players both did that too. I'm more inclined to believe it's an android TV issue than a Mi box one.

Gangstastick

I own one. Went to a lot of trouble to get it.

My thoughts: it is great for a non techy person. If all you want is a media player then it is solid. Does what it says it does. And for a really good price too.

However, I am not that sort of person. I need a work horse. I thought I was getting an android TV box, with all the freedom of customisation of the android platform, but this box is severely limited by bugs and non limitations of "android TV". I bought this in October because January was too far (I couldn't hold out for a New shield which I knew was coming). It's like getting a cheap Chinese made phone when I've always used Galaxy S series phones. In truth you get what you pay for. I'll be moving up soon. But it's important to state here , this box is great if you are looking for a basic android TV box.

CTU

I had trouble with my first as it would not boot, returned it and my replacement worked flawlessly since

GreatLookPhotos

I bought a USB to Ethernet adapter for mine...not a big fan of WiFi for streaming. Never had issues with it though.

JoeKerr_

I have had the Mi Box since launch day it it is almost perfect for my needs. The only two issues I have seen is adaptive storage does not work and sometimes the feed from my HDHomeRun is bad. There is no fixing the storage issue and if I stop the HDHomeRun video and restart it it works fine. I do use a usb Ethernet adapter and not WiFi. Kodi, Netflix, etc all work for my little 27 inch TV in my home office.

syruptape

Mine works perfectly and even if it didn't I wouldn't be super bummed. They are 70 bucks at Walmart... I didn't expect it to be groundbreaking technology but I'm very happy with it.

go_green_machine

I had a friend and a couple of family members all purchase Mi boxes and HDHomerun Primes the last few weeks, a total of 8 Mi Boxes and 3 HDHomerun Primes. Zero issues. Unfortunately, anything mass produced will have the occasional problem rolling off of the assembly line.

Jedixscum

I've had mine for around 2 months and haven't had any problems. I use it for all my entertainment exclusively to. I guess I'm one of the lucky few.

o0adam0o

I have one and don't see remote issues. I'm connected via ethernet. I'll never do WIFI. And I've never had issued with Kodi.

Trunks78

Hi, I'm usually able to notice frame drops (they make me crazy). I use the box as a secondary setup (bedroom) and with HDMI Adaptation ON and "best frame rate" setting in developer options I don't notice frame drops at 1080p 60hz resolution using Netflix and SPMC (kodi) content at 24fps. Maybe my TV has some kind of motion compensation enabled...

rrainwater

I don't believe Xiaomi has any plans to support this box. Sure, eventually, they may update the box to Nougat. But that will probably be the last update. They haven't had a single update since launch day.
