Can I control my Nexus Player with Google Home?

by spiderkid319

I just ordered a Nexus Player and an HDHomeRun Prime from eBay to use as a cable/streaming box. I have a Google Home. Can I use it to say, for example, "Tune to channel 507" or "open Hulu"?

Partially. You can do "Play X from YouTube on Y" where Y is the Nexus Player name (Living Room, bedroom, etc).

You can also play music "Play X by Y on Z".

If you're playing music or watching YouTube, you can say "next video" or "next track" or "stop". I haven't experimented too much with it, but I do tell it play a YouTube video on my TV and then tell it to stop immediately after as way to turn on my TV.

I too have a HDHomeRun Prime but don't think there's any integration.

There's a few ways to accomplish this, but you'll have to get some additional hardware. You'll need an IR blaster of some kind, like a Harmony hub, and you'll need to use IFTTT and potentially another home automation hub or using the Maker channel on IFTTT. Supposedly, individual controls are coming to Google Home integration, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
