USB 3.O SSD or HDD for new Shield TV

by KrispyKareem87

I pre-ordered one of the new 16gb Shield TVs and wanted to add external storage when it arrives. For those of you who have them, is there a significant performance difference between an SSD and HDD with the Shield to justify spending more on an SSD?

I don't have a huge library, and I'm mostly using this for OTA DVRing, Kodi and Netflix.

Edit: The Gen 2 16 GB Shield TV doesn't take SD cards, just USB.

I am planning to jump on an SSD deal when I see the next one. Currently using a thumb drive on the higher speed rating, I get lag everytime I go into settings and view all apps no other issues that I see it's just a pet peeve.

I use a 128GB SSD on my Shield through the USB 3.0. Absolutely love it. Everything runs so smooth.

You honestly don't need to spend much, just find a cheapo one and buy a USB 3.0 adapter.
I bought a cheap $40 128GB SSD locally and an Orico SATA to USB 3.0 adapter from AliExpress for $5.

I then ran Disk Speed Test (sideloaded app) to test read/write speeds. Here were my results:

Internal storage (16GB flash):
239 MB/s read
42 MB/s write

G.Skill 64GB Class 10 MicroSD:
57 MB/s read
13 MB/s write

Gigastone 2.5" 128GB SSD using Orico USB 3.0 SATA adapter:
153 MB/s read
151 MB/s write

I plan to buy a second Shield later this month and will no doubt look for another cheap SSD to add to it.

I wouldn't bother with an SSD, If you're planning on using the drive for blu-ray rips (~40GB) a standard USB 3.0 drive will work fine. I've found that NAS drives aren't fast enough if you're using a wireless connection but will work well with gigabit connections.

I guess you could use the SSD for adoptable storage, I'd probably just use a microsd card though.
