Stop saying Android TV is dead, here is a complete list of devices with the OS from Google

by 513

So after this CES I tried to create a (mostly) complete list of devices, set-top-boxes, TV, etc with official Android TV. As you can see it's quite a long list and if you find other devices, just reply ;)

Set-top box (TV and internet providers)

Televisions

Gaming/Streaming box

Have you seen the google pay app store tho? I have an Apple TV 4th gen and a couple of android TV boxes and I can practically check the Apple app store every day for new apps. Android TV seems to be frozen in time.

Revealed at CES too, we can add another provider for 2017 :

  • Stofa (Danish operator)

http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2017/01/09/stofa-launches-android-tv-box-kaon/

"The box was developed in cooperation with Google and South Korean manufacturer Kaon. The box features the latest version of Android TV 7.0 (Nougat) and boasts no less than four DVB-C tuners, built-in WiFi, 2GB of RAM and decoding of 4K UltraHD, it also has built-in Chromecast capability."

I still can't believe Google doesn't have their own Android TV device. I think that is what gives this impression Google isn't fully committed to Android TV. The fact that there are only 2 Android TV streaming devices for sale is also not a great sign.

All I need to find now are only these posts, saying Android TV is dead.

The biggest problem on this sub is the narrow vision that people here have for Android TV. Android TV is bigger than the STB market. Its also a global platform. That might not fit what you want it to be, but its what Google has built (all of these Android TVs exist because Google partnered with them).

Those RCA TVs were never released. I know because I wanted one and was looking out for them for nearly a year.

There's plenty of TV apps and at least five million activations. It's hardly dead. I'm personally well versed in the platform and it's far more active today than a year ago.

And Google shows some commitment to Android TV with the addition of Google Assistant. Now, if they have a Live Channels version of YouTube Unplugged, that would make me happy and show some commitment as well.

Google as a business only builds the foundation and leaves the rest to the manufacturers. If the manufacturers can prove the concept and build the user base, than Google will put more resources into it. It's a bit double edge sword business strategy, (aka half assed because Google knows it has the leverage) but it works for them.

The more Nvidia type support from these businesses, the more market share that makes Google feel the platform they created is worth their effort to maintain.

I hope to see some of these companies on the list put a lot of marketing and/or effort into their products.

I tried to find stats about how many devices are active few days ago... Or the part of apps bought on the Play Store from a tv... I found nothing :( Do you have an idea ?

subvisser

Yeah, and there are still BlackBerry devices on the market, too.

From your list, it looks like the only competitive product is the buggy Mi Box. I don't think I would buy that for a family member when I can just get them a Chromecast, Roku or Fire TV. They're cheaper and more reliable. The platform isn't doing all that well.

Frankly_George

Plenty of devices in that list, sure. Can you get them all in the United States? For better or worse there are a lot of Redditors from the United States so if they can't get the box, then it might as well not exist.

The TVs are a bit misplaced as well because someone looking for AndroidTV isn't necessarily about to junk their current model to add the platform. So that reduces the surface area even further.

The gaming devices you list? Misleading. Two of those are gone already. Neither ASUS or Google are still making Nexus Players. The Razer Forge was discontinued as well.

That doesn't leave much in the hardware space now does it?

Then we move on to software. Oi! What a mess that is!

There are lots of streaming apps in the Play Store, sure--but many of them do not work unless you have a cable account of some sort. The Live Channels app was a brilliant idea but since I bought my Nexus Player I've watched as app after app has been removed from it. These days the only things left are PlutoTV, the Weather app (when it works) and one or two news apps, both of which are redundant based on already existing streams in PlutoTV.

If nothing else, why not create a way to add streams from apps like Hulu or Netflix to pad out the channels? If a developer on Kodi can manage to make it work (See PseudoTV Live!) then surely Google can add something of this nature. It's really not a rocket science.

Speaking of Google and video, why the hell haven't they managed to leverage YouTube further? You'd think that there would be who channels dedicated to content found on YouTube, some sort of super playlists which could be created and curated by YouTubers to make their own TV stations. Nothing of the sort seems to exist. Such a failure of imagination!

Speaking of failure, let's talk about games. As in games? What games? Compared to the many many options in the Play Store for phones there are hardly anything worth buying! There are also no real demos available to help someone decide if they should take a chance or not.

Google is a big company, you'd think it would be able to build a control map for the standard gamepads, the standard remotes and some sort of wizard which would make it easy to port over already existing games. Instead I go to Google Games and look at all the fun I could be having--on my phone or my tablet--because none of them exist for my AndroidTV. Seriously, how hard is this?

The freaking Ouya for all its faults (and as an owner I know there are many) had better game support than Google seems to be able to pull together. How is this possible?

Why isn't Pocket Mortys available? You'd think it would be made for AndroidTV? They have a software d-pad and buttons, just need to map them to a game pad!

Why aren't the countless Ren'py\Visual Novel games available? You'd think something like this was made to be played with a remote on AndroidTV! Why isn't Google encouraging PyTom to add support to AndroidTV? Why haven't they encouraged ports?

I mentioned Ouya, why hasn't someone from Google contacted some of those developers and encouraged\helped them to port their already existing games from the Ouya\Cortex versions to AndroidTV? Sure not every game is worth having and some of the better ones might be locked into contracts but this isn't every game or every developer. Why aren't those games working for AndroidTV? These are games which already support gamepad controls, they just need to support Google's mappings.

There are all kinds of things like this. AndroidTV is dead, not because it's bad and the market has rejected it--but because Google isn't giving it the help it needs to compete. AndroidTV is dead because Google doesn't care and isn't even trying.

phdzor

too bad google dont care that much about Android TV, for example last time when they updated youtube app was in April 2016 which is pretty sad...

RanmaCanada

Man I can't wait for the day Google decides they will discontinue AndroidTV because "it was just an experiment".
