Android dev here. What TV apps do you want to see?

by fleker2

I've been building a few simple open source utility apps for Android TV, including the most recent "Family Calendar".

I have one more week of break from college, so I figured this was a good time to hack together another simple TV project.

What kind of app would be the most useful? If you see your idea already listed, upvote that comment so it's easier to parse the comments.

Of course, if any other developers are here and want to help, feel free to join the project.

I mentioned this to you before in feedback for Cumulus - but I think a lot of people would like to see a plugin where we could add our local media files as a channel in Live Channels (think of it like I have a lot of TV shows on my server/NAS - add a directory(ies) through your app and it shuffles all those media files in a channel in Live Channels - simulating a TV station/channel - with WOL for the app to media source also if possible - don't know if it would be or not just throwing things out there).

Andrroid

Sleep timer.

Custom shortcut creator, that will shows up on leanback launcher.

  • Execute shell command

  • Launch apps/intents

  • Open custom URI, etc

  • Just a really simple HDMI-CEC app that turns the TV off, then id never need another remote except the shields. Also if its possible can your "Launch on boot" app harness CEC to launch apps?

  • More Google apps, given most of their API's are available it might be easy to hack together some to work on androidTV with tv remote navigation, namely Google Maps and google Photos

  • A knockoff "Live Channels" app but dedicated to "Live Radio" sure i could use Cumulus to probably play some streams and dump them into the Live Channels app, but id rather keep Radio/TV Separated

  • I haven't used CumulusTV for a while now as i sold my Nexus player and am waiting to order a shield TV, so i dont know if its possible now but id like to be able to add youtube playlists or live youtube, or Twitch streams, really just the more support there is for live channels the better, also would be good if it supports XML, im really not well versed with JSON and to me XML is more structured and easy to read

  • A easy File Browser with network drive support (View, open with an app, different view formats, thats about it), ES file explorer is a nightmare to navigate and Solid explorer promised a androidTV version designed from the ground up, again its been a year since i had androidtv i dont know whats out there now

Good music visualiser.

There's a couple of alright phone ones but I'm yet to find a TV one. Something that will just give some nice ambience to my music would be awesome.

Simple stuff would be okay, but ideally something nicer than win media player.

I'd like to wish for more wishes!

Android to android sound stream. This way we can listen to the Android TV through another android device within the same WiFi network without the need for bluetooth headphones.

Any way to make a launcher app for other apps of my choosing? We all have apps installed that are either side loaded or web installed, so don't show up on the main screen.

If we had an apps "folder" that just launches a list of chosen apps, it's a little nicer than going to the botton->settings->apps->side scroll to your app->click->open.

Edit: sounds like HAL launcher is something to try out for this kind of functionality. Thx! edit2: ok so HAL is a full launcher for the home screen. A nice choice. But I figure it would be nice to have a folder like function to open up and select which sideloaded app to launch.

I don't really know how feasible this is tbh, but it would be AWESOME if you could hook a usb blu-ray player up and be able to actually use the shield and it's remote as a blu-ray player.

Proper IPTV support in Live Channels in Nougat, just like it was a tuner, with a guide and everything.

I would love an app similar to series guide (the devs have said that they will not be making a Android TV app) that tracks your progress through shows. It would also be great to have the fan tv feature to let you find where it is streaming. And then the grand pupa, to be able to with one click be taken to the other app to start watching the selected show.... That has been what I have always wanted my android tv to do.

Thanks for the suggestions. Many of the ideas may be too difficult to get done in a short timeframe, but I hope I can build useful software for you.

Pull up local media via Plex by voice either through the AndroidTV remote or Alexa

If SiliconDust somehow prevents HDHomerun from working with Live Channel's DVR, I'd like an app that lets me do so.

I would LOVE a good web wrapped version of the Weather Underground website for android TV. pretty much this view would look great on a TV, and be really informative. https://www.dropbox.com/s/p9xbhtcjsik1cvt/Screenshot%202017-01-10%2010.36.37.png?dl=0

I love setting the graph to show all the options: Dew Point, Feels Like, Temperature, Cloud Cover, Chance of Precip., Humidity, Pressure, Precip. Accum. Total, Hourly Liquid Precip., and Wind Speed. The mobile apps don't allow for that and it stinks.

If you wanted to get crazy with it, it would also make for a cool daydream/screensaver. It would be cool to see the weather when I'm not doing anything else.

Enable access to notifications in Leanback.

I was recently looking into Cinemagraphs again and it's amazing how some are just really high quality and would look nice on a big screen looping for a few minutes. Since hooking into Daydream is probably not possible it would still be nice to have an app to manually run. It would then start to show the best (currated?) Cinemagraphs on TV. Slowly fading to black and to the next one every few minutes. It could also be a phone app that uses Chromecast functionality to start the slideshow.

fervidfly

a calendar app where you could select a bunch of tv shows and have them display when next episode is etc.

An internet browser that is actually functional.

Something to shake up the stagnant local/network-stored audio player potential. Everything on Android TV is geared towards streaming and there's a simplistic catch-all native local music playing ability build into the OS.

There's practically nothing to take advantage of those interested in personally stored audio files who keep them on a hard-drive or plugged into the Shield and have their sound-system right next to their TV (and if so, likely connected to the AndroidTV for movies). Instead, people are investing in making rasbperry-pi based solutions with a DAC or shelling out for expensive purpose-built hardware. The Shield, at least, can use USB DACs in the same way a raspberry-pi can so this would be a breath of fresh air for that market.

At the moment I'm getting good use out of SBPlayer but would love to see competition to showcase the potential better.

Are you at all familiar with how Kodi add-on scrapers work? There's an add-on I've been trying to repair as someone with minimal to no coding knowledge and I haven't had any luck - it scrapes series, seasons, and episodes fine, but the actual video link doesn't work. I'm trying to figure out if that's a result of a change on the hosting website (because I can't click through to the video link when I find it in the code - the site says it has to be viewed on preferred domains, which I imagine is the main domain of the service) or if the scraper just isn't pulling the link correctly.

HansWursT619

I want a good Photos app.
With support for local files as well as Google Photos and maybe other services.
All existing apps are slow or clunky for slideshows. And if I could use my own photos for the Screensaver, it would be perfect :-p

m0kum

Firecore's Infuse ported to Android TV :)

SecretDiaryofFallGuy

Hbbtv viewer to be able to view hbbtv apps within Android tv

Data usage app that work with ethernet

MediaShare2000

It'd be great if you or someone would make a file explorer specifically for the Android TV with home networking support. I know ES File Explorer is on there but it navigates like garbage with the remote and gives a really poor user experience since it's not actually designed for that platform. There's not many to choose from on the Playstore and sadly as bad as it is ES is the best of what's there.

dinglebrits

An app that scans a hard drive, finds all the rar files, extracts them, and then deletes the original data. I had a java app that did this in Windows and so far it's my biggest regret with switching to androidtv
