Is HDHomeRun DVR ready for prime time?

by dougw03

Wondering if any of the beta users can comment on how stable HDHomeRun DVR is at this point. I saw some comments from SD saying that they will have a release candidate by the end of Q1-17...meanwhile I am patiently waiting to ditch WMC. I understand DRM channels won't be supported for some time, but how is the overall experience otherwise? SD's comments made it sound like small things like close captioning were the only things they had to sort out (aside from DRM of course).

Is HDHomeRun DVR ready for prime time?

Lol, no.

The user interface is just bad. You can check this out on the regular version of the app.

It looks like someone's first app, but this is coming from a company that needs this app (since WMC is dying) to survive.

Plex's DVR functionality seems alright, it is still lacking commflagging and live tv though. I don't see myself leaving MythTV any time soon, but it is good to know that something like Plex is available if I had to cut over.

I'm curious as well. Still rocking WMC on my Win7 machine and an XBox 360 at this point.

Why not use it on Kodi instead? Or with Plex Media Server?

Might want to explore the Channels app on Apple TV (if you own or plan to get one) who just yesterday came up with a DVR with commercial skipping and full 14 days worth of EPG. Also they have EPG for Live TV which looks like WMC when compared to anything that SiliconDust has put out.

For full disclosure, I haven't tried it out myself. I am in the same boat and planning to try out as soon as I get an Apple TV.

I use both an HDHomeRun Connect and Plex for DVR systems, I have a Sony Bravia Android TV

My observations:

  1. The HDHomeRun's user interface is brutal. Really rough.
  2. Plex does a great job, however I noticed its recording all having bad audio sync issues. I've begun to re-encode them using Handbrake, down to 720P and have fixed that sync issue.
  3. Plex is a bit annoying as you have to go to the web interface to record a new show (nothing through the TV, nothing through the Android App on the phone)

I think an HDHomeRun Extend might be really interesting. It has hardware H264 encoding built in ( https://www.silicondust.com/support/faq/#what-specifically-is-the-difference-between-the-hdhomerun-connect-and-the-hdhomerun-extend ).

One other thing you can do is use the HDHomeRun as a DVR, and then point the free version of plex at that directory that the HD HomeRun DVR writes to. This works really well. But their recording software is so clunky that I went away from this solution.

InstaTV has app for both Android and Android TV. But no DVR Support. DVR Support is only available for iOS currently.

The OP is probably using cable since he mentions DRM. But for those who use an OTA antenna, the forthcoming Tablo Droid software/service may be the best solution on the horizon for Android TV. It will work with a couple of different USB dual-tuners, including one to be sold by Tablo. Guide data/DVR service will cost $4/mo or $40/yr.
