Is anyone else concerned with how feature stripped Android TV apps are?

by destructor_rph

For example the youtube app doesent let you view comments or modify playlists and google play music doesent let you add to playlists or library

Concerned? No.... Bothered? Yes

YouTube is missing comments on every platform I use (PS3, PS4, Roku, Fire TV, Shield TV). I guess I don't miss it because I seldom look at them. Same with playlists on Google Music. TV is for playback not creation so it seems par for the course.

I think these omissions are based around expected use cases for TVs. If you're watching a show with your family, usually they can provide the commentary.

It goes back to Google's idea of "Leanback", using your TV for consumption. Your phone can be used for more elaborate actions.

I think they may have swung too far in the passive direction, but that's why I wouldn't be too concerned.

I applaud Twitch at least for providing full comment support. Since you can pair a bluetooth keyboard with any AndroidTV device there's no reason not to include commenting. It's particularly senseless not to let people at least read the comments. Right now I have no way to know if something I liked is actually fake and gay.

I really don't like the YouTube app on Android TV. I usually use SPMC with the YouTube plugin instead. It still doesn't show comments, but it's so much more efficient to navigate. The only downside is that it doesn't mark items as watched for other YouTube clients (web and official apps).

While Comments are something that definitely shouldn't be on TV, I do agree with the general idea of this post of Android TV apps being way limited. Yes you could say that it's supposed to be a TV experience which isn't supposed to be the complete experience. I get that but I don't want complete, just a few more things to make it good.

A few Examples:

  • YouTube
    • Long-Press videos to add to Watch Later
    • View Playlists without starting them to skip ahead faster
    • Shuffle button for playlists (good for Music since YT Music doesn't have an app)
    • Add to Playlist button in player (so many times have I liked a video instead of Favorited because I couldn't on TV, same with Watch Later. Liked just to look at later)
  • Play Music
    • How are the Songza curated stations still only for Paid users on the TV app when they have been for everybody for months now
    • My Library has Artists, Genres, and Albums but no All Songs section
  • Play Store
    • Can't view past downloaded apps in My Apps making it a pain to redownload them (especially since Android TV doesn't seem to restore apps like phones do on first setup)
  • Play Movies
    • Can't view the Free TV category on TV, every other one shows up like on phone.

Lastly as a bit of a new feature suggestion instead of something they don't have already... PLEASE Google, take more advantage of Live Channels! The Play Movies Trailer channel is nice but why not have a channel with all your purchased content? Or how about a YouTube channel with your Subscriptions? Live Channels is one of the best things about ATV but basically nobody has taken advantage of it.

I don't miss the comments, but I do wish that it showed annotations. I know it would be hard to do without a mouse but not being able to follow mentioned links is a minor annoyance.

Android TV is meant for the TV. It tries to resembles the TV experience as possible. I'm cool with that for my TV. I'll use my phone or laptop for all the other stuff.

lidiotduvillage

it's a real pain to not have comments on youtube and Gplay, devs are stupids most of google android tv apps are missing so many features. so noobified for the average joe.

Emx333

Why would you want to see comments on your TV? It's bad enough when I have to read subtittles in a movie. Now you want that times a billion, but with people just trolling each other?
