Android TV Built-In vs nVidia Shield TV

I was at Best Buy earlier this evening, looking to pick something up as televisions are on sale right now, and saw the Sony 850D, 55" 4K HDR Television with Android TV for ~$900. As I've been thinking about picking up the nVidia Shield TV and an LG 55" 4K Screen (sans HDR), this seems like a pretty decent deal.

The two apps that I'm planning on running on it the most will be Kodi and Need For Speed - No Limits.

Thoughts?

My plans always been to find the best tv with the dumbest features, and add a shield too it.

my folks are still using a 2009 55" led samsung tv and just added a kodi box

also worth noting the in built androidtv's wont be as mod friendly as external boxes like the shield, their communities are too small

Decent TV in terms of picture quality. Light bloom in dark rooms can be bad on that tv though. Definitely check out the rtings review.

Android TV experience won't be as good as on the shield.

The Shield's CPU is no doubt far more powerful than whatever is in that Sony TV. The Shield can play almost every format with no transcoding, while I'd bet the Sony has to transcode anything that isn't MPEG4 H.264.

I'm semi-drawing a blank on the particulars, but my buddy has a 810C (IIRC) and he can't properly play back totally legal and in no way downloaded files off his NAS because it either doesn't fill the screen or only plays stereo. VLC doesn't solve it either. This has been a known bug plaguing Sony owners since 2015. Clearly Sony doesn't care to fix it.

I'd ping him to ask for the details, but he's drunk and was rage-texting me about not being able to find the Nintendo Treehouse Switch livestream which RAN THIS MORNING AND I'D SENT HIM A LINK TO IT!

HIM: Where the fuck is this Treehouse! Damn if I can find it! Damn near 10pm and nothing i can find!

ME: It was this morning. I sent you the link.

HIM: I can't find shit. I thought this was live at 9:30 est! Fevby!

ME: What part of IT WAS THIS MORNING is confusing you?

HIM: OK fuck it! I thought it was in the evening. Good night.

I went to YouTube, typed "nintendo treehouse" and it was the first hit. Sent it to him. Pondered rethinking my peer group.

I have a 2015 Bravia and a gen 1 shield, the shield shits all over the Sony performance wise. The Sony requires lots of restarts, and is just super laggy. They're pretty identical, but the Sony version of Android is somewhat neutered.

go with the sony
