PSA: Nvidia Shield TV and Harmony

by bdrrr

This might have been discussed but I think it should be shared again as it took me 2hrs to figure out a fix.

I have an Harmony hub that worked perfect with my Nexus Player.

Just upgraded to Nvidia shield TV 16Gb Gen2. Therefore, no IR btw.

When I added Nvidia Shield TV to my list of devices, the back button on my remote did not work. A few other "glitches" too.

The fix was simple: in Harmony when using the Hub, pretend your Shield TV is a Nexus Player. It will pair over Bluetooth and all the buttons will be fixed.

I had to re map buttons for my gen 1 Shield to work properly with my Harmony Hub. They always defaulted to TV control. After setting it up as a Nexus Player, everything is working better than before. The Bluetooth control is smoother than IR. I can now hold down on the directional pad of the remote to scroll through menus instead of tapping multiple times. Thanks for the tip.

Are you sure the back button didn't work or just wasn't mapped correctly? Logitech by default maps all Android TV device buttons differently.

Just a heads-up for you, and future Google users. Logitech has enabled native Bluetooth control. Also allows the use of Amazon Video with the Harmony remote (an the latest Shield TV OTA).

Details here (shameless plug alert) .

Does the off button on the harmony turn the shield off for you? I have the same device setup, when i turn the shield off the harmony game controllers stay on and their batteries eventually die (usually happens when i turn off while watching the live channels app).

Most people have known this based on the specs, I was waiting for mine to arrive to confirm. You can grab a FLIRC if you really want IR still.

Thanks for posting this! I get mine tomorrow and would be going through this the hard way without your post.

Mine works fine as an nvidia shield. I may have had to remap a couple of buttons for my preferences. I set both the exit and back buttons to be 'back' and it works fine.

I also have the logitech harmony smart keyboard and I added it to the shield as a BT keyboard and it works fine.

So do you have full control of your new Shield with Harmony now? I have a gen 1, which I assume uses IR. Is the bluetooth pairing any better or worse than IR?

Also, if using a Harmony, what do we lose by not having IR on the shield itself?

I pre-ordered straight away, then cancelled just as quickly when i found out the IR port was gone. I have the Harmony 650 working just fine with my Gen.1.
