There is, however you need to use the external keyboard helper app and either have a BT keyboard device or flirc to pass the key codes.
It also means you loose the on screen keyboard in the OS

You can setup harmony activities to start certain apps. I've done this for Sling TV. Just have it turn on the appropriate devices add commands to go the the desired app. Example of commands to add: press home button, press down button twice, press right button once, press ok. Boom, it opens the desired app as long as it is always in the same spot.
Not that I know of.
