Shield TV 2017: No Netflix HDR

by k8-bit

Update: As LeftNoRightTurn discovered - there's an un-notified Netflix update in the playstore - installing this immediately resolved the issue for me \o/

Got my Shield TV today, to replace my gen1 AFTV. It's amazing as expected. Got an oddity tho, cant get Netflix to do HDR. Amazon Prime does, but Netflix just lists content that I know should be in HDR as UltraHD 4k. I double checked by playing some of this content (e.g. Jessica Jones) and whilst its in 4k, its not in HDR.

Standalone HDR files play via the video player from USB, and in SPMC (after some fiddling with settings) so I'm not sure what's up. I'm on the proper subscription level and playback settings with Netflix.

I'm quoting this from the Shield forum as something you can try.

  • Log into Netflix on your computer.
  • Choose the profile you usually use.
  • Click your icon on the top right and click on "Your Account".
  • Under "My Profile" click "Playback Settings".
  • Make sure you're set to "Auto" or "High".
  • Then "Save".
  • Try again on your SATV through the profile you just edited.

I'm having the same problem.

Amazon 4k HDR works fine, SPMC 4k HDR works fine, Netflix plays 4k non-HDR only. Playback is set to high in settings.

What is the easiest way to check whether the app / netflix is outputting HDR?

What tv?

What TV do you have? I am having a similar issue.

Make sure you upgrade your netflix app.

Do you see Netflix results in the global search? When I find a show I know is on Netflix, global search only returns "available on Vudu" but no Netflix. Bizarre.

You dear sir have discovered a glitch that no one else is facing. Which usually means one thing - user error.
