Searching for a TV Box

by chotan89

Hey, I hope I'm on the right subreddit for this question. I search for a good budget box for my TV. I just need it to watch netflix and some streaming Websites. My TV ist capable to play 1080p so no 4k needed. There are so many boxes out there and I have no clue whats good or bad. I want to pay max 50$. Thanks in advance!

The only AndroidTV device close to that price range is the MiBox and for your desired usage will work great. The other device is the ShieldTV but that is out of your budget. Any other device you are in the wrong sub.

Not Android TV but the Kinde Fire TV stick might work well for OP. I have one and it runs smoother than my Nexus Player (which does run Android TV). I would say the Kindle is better build, the remote feels way better. It doesn't have a native Youtube app but Netflix, Hulu, and Kodi seem to work great. Plus if you have prime it does Prime Videos out of the box.

Again thanks. I'll take a look at all the devices and decide from there!

For future reference, this sub is specifically for Android TV. The /r/cordcutters sub is more general.

I'd recommend looking at the 2016 Roku Streaming Stick (3600). It retails at $50 but was on sale for $35 at most stores during the holidays.

some streaming websites

Not sure if you meant apps or really did mean websites. Screen casting/mirroring is available on a few different devices, but how it works and what's required varies by device and OS.

Mi Box would be my recommendation at $70, but it comes with a few specials that equal that value. 3 months of Sling TV for free, 3 free movies and $5 credit for a movie from Vudu, and a trial to CBS Access. If you are interested in those, than your cost is $0 (depending on how you look it it). Add SPMC or Kodi to it (through the Google Playstore), you save more than spent.

Fire Stick is cheap and is good. You can sideload Kodi or SPMC, but it isn't in the Amazon App store, so you have to learn to sideload (it's easier than it may sound, but still added steps). I'm not crazy about it because it caters mostly to Prime, but you can get Netflix, YouTube, etc for it. If you use Prime than the UI is great for you.

I'd stay away from Roku personally. I have the 2016 stick and learned that most apps are either watered down/bare bones or are religious apps (not a big deal, but when they sprout "we have a ton of apps", and 90% are from community churches, it's a bit of a what the hell feeling). Also they love the ads, and it's a lot of them... one is 1/2 your screen sized too, and they have a very very loose privacy policy.
