I went searching and it sounds bad but they all sound like that around release. Has it improved itself? If I do get a Mi Box is there a universal remote I could use with it?

I have one in the bed room on a 1080 tv so i can't speek to 4k or hdr.we use it for mostly streaming with some lower end emulation (nes)i have had no problems with it.we use a harmony 650/700 and it works fine.
Not a shield but for the price it is a good buy IMHO.
Have one in the bedroom (1080p) also used primarily for PS Vue, Netflix and Kodi. I haven't had any issues with mine. Think I got it not long after its release.
I've had one for almost two weeks now, and it's great to be honest. If you're looking for something like a Roku with the ability to run Kodi, or looking for something that works like a Fire Stick but runs 4k/60fps, then the Mi Box is perfect. I watch Netflix at 4k, and everything else that wasn't made for 4k scales perfectly. The only thing that kind of sucks is that HDR on Netflix is not currently working, but rumors say that we'll have to wait until they roll out the Android 7.0 update (the company announced that it will be released in the early part of the first quarter of this year, so it's coming).
It's honestly just a step down from the Shield which already runs the new Android OS. I would definitely get one and test it out before you read online about others and their problems, as I myself have never had any of the problems that most people have complained about online.
No Amazon Video
The Mi box is great for its price point, but get a Nvidia Shield if you can afford to spend the $200. Even if you don't game, it a lot quicker at doing tasks ,and it has the most available content of any Android TV box (with the addition of Amazon Video).
Fine if you don't run into the Netflix issue. Some boxes appear to run Netflix fine, some don't. Mine didn't so that was a dealbreaker.
It's quite good with no problems on my end. Has all the apps I used for Roku except one private app, but then I used SPMC/Kodi, which is 1000x better than my one missing Roku app.
I recommend it. As to the remote, I use the IR version Harmony 700. The 650 also works and I believe the next one lower works also (that's about $25). You can also do expensive Bluetooth remotes, or use your tv remote if your tv is CEC compatible. As with many streaming devices, the programmable buttons are plentiful though.
I've had it for 2 months now and I'm totally satisfied with it. In my case, I don't have a 4K TV, so I cannot comment on whether 4K content lags or not, but it has no trouble playing 1080x60p videos, from my NAS nor from YouTube. No stutters, no dropped frames, so I don't really get why some people have all these issues with it. The only thing that occasionally happens is that the remote loses connection, which is a small annoyance. Other than that I couldn't be more happier with it.
Only problem I've had is surround sound over optical only working in Plex, not Netflix. It apparently works in Kodi too, but I don't use it. My receiver is old and doesn't support HDMI audio, so I'm stuck with stereo for Netflix.
Other than that, it streams 4K no problem!
Mine arrived a few days ago. The only grip I have is that for some reason voice search does not work with Netflix and it doesn't give me the option of having recommendations of Netflix in the home screen!
I bought one this week. Netflix wont work. I restored the box to factory settings, updated the box and tried everything I read here on reddit. I am going to return it next week. Netlfix is my primary video streaming service.
I hate it, it's so disappointing. My reasons are:
I have troubles with casting to it - Forget mirroring my phone to it, casting from an app like YouTube or Google Music is inconsistent in whether it works or not (often time not working). When it does work it's perfectly fine, but the fact that I have to fanangle with it is ridiculous.
It's not easily customizable - I'm not a fan of being advertised to on my homescreen. While you can limit the amount of recommendations shown to you on the screen, you can't remove all of them. I even went so far as to buy a new launcher to try and get rid of this problem, and that didn't work. I couldn't make my new launcher (simple launcher) the default for the homescreen, so I have to go to the simple launcher app whenever I want to have it utilized.
It's limited in play store apps - Sure you can sideload apps, but then you may not get the full functionality of the app. The play store selection on this thing is a joke in how little it is.
Simple things are inconvienant - Want a file explorer, have to download/sideload an app because the stock one is a slow, unhelpful mess. Want to close an app, well sometimes the holding the back button gives you the option, other times have fun navigating to the settings and turning it off from there.
And worst of all - THE REMOTE DOESN'T HAVE A FUCKING PAUSE BUTTON. This isn't a problem in quality apps like HBO Now or VUDU, but sling (which was my primary reason for getting the box) doesn't have an in-app pause button (which is already retarded on their part). This left me using rewind as some broken cheap ass partial remedy.
The only reason I haven't returned this crap is because it has a USB port unlike my TV, allowing me to connect my external hard drive to watch stuff I already own. And the pictures used as a screensaver are absolutely beautiful, turning my TV into a wonderful nature photo display.
Hopefully if you do decide to get one, your experience is better than mine. From this thread alone I'm in the minority, so I'm glad to hear there are people that are happy with this thing. Just sucks that I'm not one of them.
Just got one yesterday and set it up with the new firmware upgrade. Ran it on a standard 1080p tv. Netflix gave me no issues (ran it for a couple of hours with shows) and kodi installed with no issues. Pretty fast interface, some slow down with voice commands but I'm comparing this to Shield TV. Overall a good purchase for the price.
I grew tired of waiting for walmart so I canceled my order. Then I went to one of the other walmarts in town and they had it in stock. Picked it up and set it up. So far I like it but I'll have to see how it handles my Sony TV coming in. btw I love that I can tell it to autostart sling tv
I purchased one a week ago and have been using it on my 4k samsung without any issues.
