Whirring noise from new shield

by chiefVetinari

I'm pretty sure I have a defective unit. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

After my new AndroidTv started up (after installing 5.0.1 update) it started making a whirring noise. It's quite loud, easily noticeable from 10 feet away. It's definitely from the box and not from the ac adapter.

if I restart the shield, the noise goes away. However, once you do something like start watching TV with Playstation Vue or a video on Netflix, the noise will start up again. Once it starts, it never goes away.

The device has a fan but usually it is very quiet. I have never actually heard it. So maybe your fan is defective.

I think the spinning platter in your hard drive came off its spindle. Just jam a flathead screwdriver in the microSD port and set it back in place.

Jokes aside, no idea why this would happen from a software update unless they were overclocking the SoC in this new update and fudged a number somewhere. I would try a factory reset to see if it was just an error while flashing the update.

If you bought instores, call them up and confirm they can exchange it and then factory reset (Make sure back up if needed), then go swap out. If online, I'd call nvidia.
