New Shield TV Stuck On Android Boot Screen

by danrvm

I've been using my new Shield TV for a couple days now and decided to restart it. However, it will not boot beyond the Android startup screen. I looked up how to reset the unit but all the instructions refer to an Nvidia button that does not exist on this new model. How to I reset this thing?

Known bug. Disconnect from internet and it will start up fine. Once up, turn location services off.

I just learned WHY my Shield TV (2017) would fail to boot beyond the Android animation boot screen. I installed BubbleUPnP from the Google Play store. I noticed that it did not appear on the Home screen but I found it in my Settings | Apps listing. It must be an issue because whenever I install BubbleUPnP the problem comes back. If I have lots of time on my hands I'll try sideloading it instead.

not sure if its exactly the same issue, but I was using my Shield last night and it went into a boot loop. Had to pull the power to stop it.

Disconnecting ethernet, turning off location and reconnecting the ethernet seems to have worked.

Thanks to an awesome user on the Nvidia GeForce forum, these are the steps to perform a factory reset of the Shield TV (2017):

• Start with the power unplugged.

• Plug the controller into the USB port next to the HDMI port (only works on this port).

• Plug the power cable into the box.

• When the green light glows hold the A/B buttons at the same time.

• Using the X/Y buttons to move your selection, press the A button on "Boot recovery kernel."

• You will see the dead Android robot on the screen.

• Press B and select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset."

• When the reset has been completed it will say "Data wipe complete."

• Press the A button and it will reboot.

Pulling the power does nothing. When power is restored the Nvidia logo appears, it goes away, then the Android boot animation starts and never ends. This happens with or without anything else connected.
