newbie trying to set up a pvr on shield with hdhomerun, totally puzzled.

by roraima_is_very_tall

I have hdhomerun extend, and it works in shield's kodi, but my google-fu is too weak to discover how to download, install and configure a pvr add-on. Thanks.

edit, I also have a synology diskstation? is there a way to pvr using that?

edit2, ok, I've used Synology's Video Station, which recognized the two tuners in my hdhomerun extend, to schedule recordings. It's difficult because there's no guide (I used tv.com/listings). Before I scheduled something first I made sure I could receive the channel - did that by using hdhomerun's viewing software on my laptop.

I'm going to look into synology's tvheadend next.

edit3, ok I've just installed tvheadend on the synology. had a few kinks I worked out:

First off, the synocommunity tvheadend is out of date, synology users can go here to download the latest versions.

Then, two problems cropped up at different times. First I couldn't get tvheadend to see the hdhomerun. Then, when I installed the most recent version of tvheadend, I couldn't login, even when I set it up with the defaults (admin, admin).

This solved both of those problems . Basically you install another source in package center and then install a 'sundtek' tv tuner.

Then I followed this tutorial to set up the networks, etc. Super helpful.

I haven't yet figured out how to get program scheduling data on the synology but I see from my googling that it's fairly easy on the kodi.

And that's as far as I've gotten...

edit gazillion: I just realized I should probably be doing this on my shield instead of on the synology, I'll look into it tomorrow...

There's a bit of confusion here, there are quite a few options for the shield:

  1. Get a hdhomerun DVR subscription and you can then set up the shield as the DVR server - first you need to install the beta hdhomerun app (the grey one), then connect an external hard drive (at least 500 GB), then press play button on the shield controller 13 times (yes really) to get in the settings menu

  2. Set up the sheild (or any other box) as a Plex server, if you have Plex pass you can install the Plex DVR beta and configure it connect to your hdhomerun

  3. Use another Linux box (RPi eg) and install tvheadend - this can connect to the hdhomerun and then do all the recording etc for you, with a nice web GUI. You can then use the Kodi tvheadend PVR add-on for viewing , epg, recording etc

The kodi video add-on is basically the same as the hdhomerun android app and pretty pointless on the sheild. The Kodi hdhomerun PVR addob allows integration of hdhomerun into the Kodi live TV interface, but does not allow recording (pretty much the same as android live channels)

Edit - you can also install the hdhomerun DVR engine on your synology, I do this.

Edit edit - you can install tvheadend on the synology, this might be the best and cheapest way.

Working from memory here b/c I am "work" but there is no actual anything to download as far as PVR. You just need to upload the HDHome Run app (or whatever it's called) and then enable LiveTV. I think that was it... not sure though since I now use Emby for live tv/recordings.

Plex pass includes DVR functionality which seems decent. It works very easily with HDHR devices.

What you're trying to do is setup a backend. It sounds like you got TVHeadend going, so thats good. However, I am not sure that it works with CableCard.

http://www.schedulesdirect.org/ is a really popular subscription based service that is used for EPG data by a lot of folks who use these PVR backends.

I cant help you with Synology as I use Unraid. Can you setup WMs on Synology? Maybe setup a VM for Mythbuntu and set that up. Works in Kodi just fine :)

I recommend using the SiliconDust software. Details to be found here: https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=119

The DVR "Server" can run on a desktop, laptop, NAS, or directly on your shield (if you have a 500GB+ USB 3.0 HDD attached).

Has been working great for me.

You're confusing a few things.

Hdhomerun has its own DVR. It's unrelated to Live Channels.

Live channels has a DVR that will work with the hdhomerun, but only on devices that have nougat. Shield doesn't yet have nougat, so there is no DVR there yet.
