Stop trying to lump them in the category of 'build and forget' Chinese companies. Their history says otherwise.
The Xiaomi phone I bought in 2014 is still getting updates.

Xiaomi began their corporate life as a developer of an Android fork that came to be MIUI. It is deployed and maintained by a capable and innovative staff and has been implemented across a wide range of consumer electronics goods from phones, TV boxes, TVs, routers and even air cleaners and water purifiers. Not to mention bicycles....
Granted, AndroidTV is small potatoes in their overall scheme but to imply that they lack the talent and motivation to crank out updates is a total fallacy.
If you only have 1080p then the Mi box is pretty good right now. Update will fix a lot but at 1080p the Mi Box is a great buy at $70.

I'll be hoping for something until the end of March. If nothing comes by then, I'm going to assume nothing will ever come and get the new shieldTV.
New update for Mi box however it's not the Nougat update
Xiaomi hasn't announced anything since the Mi Box was released, and even then they barely announced it. It is likely you will never see Nougat on the Mi Box.
They aren't a very good company when it comes to updates. They like to pump out new products tho constantly and I hear their support isn't good. You should save up for a shield. Pretty sure xaomi is just another crappy Chinese company that doesn't support products in a timely manner.

don't worry xiaomi are good at providing frequent updates, they even provide weekly (weekly betas, or monthly stables) updates for all their phones. i'm using their phones since years.
they already fixed most if not all (i don't have any problems anymore) problems in the latest mibox update.
edit even Google itself said that the mibox will get 7.0 and Google assistant in the coming months :
