Using Flirc with Shield TV (2017)

by danrvm

I am using a Harmony IR remote (the 650) and have the Flirc set up using the Kodi profile. I programmed the Home button in Flirc as it wasn't working correctly in Playstation Vue. All basic functions work properly now EXCEPT on some apps, like Fan TV for example, the "select/OK" button does not work yet it works in most every other place. The spouse acceptance factor is suffering!

I saw you posted the issue on the FLIRC forum as well. I hope someone comes up with an answer as I just got the Shield and HBO GO/STARZ won't work with the OK button. Every other app seems to work fine.

I would try keyboard mode with the enter key. I believe my tests of my Harmony BT keyboard had apps like Amazon working with that. I have some FLIRCs in other devices that i can pull and test with if I have a breather.

I haven't tried with flirc but with harmony over Bluetooth, sometimes you need to use the "fullscreen" command as a secondary "OK" or "select" command (specifically this works with HBO Go and Amazon Video)... doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me but it works so I don't question it.

I honestly don't think the AndroidTV will ever work well with FLIRC. I've tested it for hours and hours, and unless there's a way to get multiple commands on a single button press, it's not going to work across all apps.

The problem is Android TV uses 3 completely different commands for entry confirmation (KEYCODE_ENTER, KEYCODE_DPAD_CENTER and KEYCODE_BUTTON_A), but not all apps accept all 3.

Can someone explain flirc to me? Whats the point in using it over the harmony via IR?

For mapping Home use WIN KEY+Return combo. For OK/select you'll need to use flirc_util.exe record_api 65 102

These work perfectly across all apps. I've not found any app these don't work in. Hope this helps!

These are the steps I've taken and so far everything is working (sorry for the extremely poor formatting but I can't figure out Reddit sometimes!):

On the Harmony Remote (using the MyHarmony software):

Attach the Harmony remote.

Add the device manufacturer of "Flirc" and the device model number of FireTV (others suggest XBMC or Media Center PC).

Rename the device Shield TV.

Program your activities.

Program the activity buttons and screens to your preference.

Sync the remote.

On the Flirc (using the Flirc software):

Attach the Flirc device. (Note: You may find it necessary to erase come commands.)

Under Controllers, select Full Keyboard end record the following commands from your remote into the Flirc:

Enter/Return (OK/Select)

Windows Key + Enter/Return (Home)

Right Arrow

Left Arrow

Down Arrow

Up Arrow

Under Controllers, select Media Keys and record the following commands from your remote into the Flirc:

Play/Pause

Stop

Previous

Next

Fast Forward

Rewind

Under Controllers, select Fire TV and record the following command from your remote into the Flirc:

Go Back (ESC/Back)

Can someone tell me how to get the FLIRC to turn off the Nvidia Shield 2017 via keypress or automatically when shutting down all devices?

While it's working fairly well with my 650, the "all off" button turns off everything but the Shield.

I also can't find any key to hold down as on the native remote which takes you to the menu where you can at least put it into sleep mode.

For everything good about the Shield, there are some design features that really make you wonder what Nvidia was thinking.
