I know there are many posts on these, it seems any device I get over the years (Roku, PS3/PS4, and now Shield TV), has issues with HBO Go, as Comcast won't support it right of the bat.
I was wondering if people have got this to work, with side loading special HBO Go apk files ?

There are many posts about it but until Comcast supports Android TV for their login services then we have to find other solutions. I've seen people loading up the Xfinity TV Go app and other HBOGo APK's but I believe you need a pointer device (mouse) to interface with the UI. Not a clean solution.
By the way, I was chatting with Comcast rep on Facebook, and he told me that everywhere instance people complain about such issues, those get forwarded to Comcast Marketing. How much they go forward with those requests, I am not so sure.
I think down the line this is all about $ and how much Android TV devices companies are willing to work it out with Comcast.
Sad part is that if you open up HBO Go on a computer and connect that computer to a TV it should play ? So I don't understand what's the deal with Comcast not allowing those devices to play.
Isn't the problem with Comcast cable subscribers with HBO trying to activate HBO GO on their devices because I use HBO GO on my SHIELD TV with Comcast Internet service, BUT I use my g/f's family DirecTV login and it works fine.
The best solution for now is to use optimized screen casting through the HBOGo app on your phone. This seems to request and play directly through your AndroidTV device the same high qaulity video from HBO's servers that would play if you were able to use the Android TV version of HBOGo with your xfinity login.
The downside is that it doesn't always work. Last night both Showtime Anytime and HBOGo were refusing to screencast for me and it definitely wasn't a wifi or network issue. I feel like on Sunday nights when their servers get swamped they prioritize requests from certain devices over requests from other devices.
