Upgrading to Android TV

by Lewitje

I have a Philips PUS8809 Tv which was shipped with Google Tv.

After using it for a year or so I realized that there's a newer OS (Android Tv) with a better UI, I don't think Philips is going to ever release an update, so I was wondering if it was possible to update the Tv to that OS somehow by myself?

Thanks! :)

You got a Google TV a year or so ago? Damn son, they saw you coming.

Buy a stb and hope your tv boots fast enough to not be a pain in the dick.

GoogleTV is dead, and will never be updated

Highly doubtful. The best you can do is update it to a Google TV based on Android 4.4, but only certain Google TV devices had updates that far.

You can get a Mi Box fairly cheap, or sometimes you can find a Nexus Player on sale for less than $50.

This is generally why it's a bad idea to EVER buy a smart TV. We keep warning people but they never listen.

On the upside, that's still a great TV just for the ambilight. Just attach a Shield or Mi Box to it. You'll get frequent updates, and when the updates stop, you only have to spend $70+ to get back in the loop with a newer system.

Yeah you won't be able to upgrade your TV. You can just get an android TV and hook it to your TV though. You are better off doing that anyway. I've always thought smart tvs were dumb, because typically you keep a tv for like 5 years and the smart features built into a tv are pretty out of date within a year or two. At least with getting a device to hook up to your TV you can upgrade it whenever. But yeah like someone else said you can get a Mi box for $69 or a used Nexus player for around $50. Of course as most people on here will tell you, you can get a shield TV, which is the best Android TV, but that's only if you are willing to spend $200. I've owned all three myself. And you can't go wrong with either.
