I just bought an Nvidia Shield TV (2017)... and it's useless.

Hello fellow android users. I got a nvidia shield tv right when they released the new model and I HATE IT.

  1. Network connection: I have a Ubiquiti UAP PRO in the same room as this pile of junk and it constantly reverts to wireless N and displays poor network quality. After rebooting the nvidia, it catches 5ghz for a short time. It is the only device on my network that has any issues.

  2. Remote: Constant unresponsiveness. Even when pointing it directly at the device it is impossible to quickly enter anything on the keyboard or scroll through menus by holding the button down. Also, the volume goes up and down as it feels like without pressing buttons. I'm guessing this is a "gesture feature" but it is laughable. I'm not going to jerk off my remote to change the volume. Why can't i get a simple button for volume??

  3. Voice: COMPLETE USELESS, it took me 25 times to try and say "PLEX" or "OPEN PLEX" before it actually decided to do anything. I never have problems on my Nexus 6 or any other google search devices.

  4. Game Streaming: One of the main reasons for purchasing such an expensive device was to play my games on the 4k tv from my PC (GTX 980 Ti). This feature seems to be alpha/beta. Resolutions take 15min to get working and then there is tons of LAG. Even with 1080p. My wireless speedtests at over 300mbps up and down (yes i have gigabit fiber). Maybe a hardwire will work better but with the highest quality wifi i expected it to work half decent.

I hope this prevents somebody from dishing out 200-300 $ for this over hyped pile of junk. I will be returning this and maybe getting a Mi Box TV or something for much cheaper. Any advice? I was hopping this Nvidia would be th solution to all my streaming needs but i guess i was wron.

I feel you. The device just doesn't seem to meet your expectations. Maybe after a couple of patches, it might be fixed

Feels like a lot of those problems would be mitigated by doing whatever you can to go wired for the network connection. If there's anyway you can run a single cable for everything else on your network, you'll be set. Faster speeds, lower latency, and no interference between the remote and the (maybe this is the cause) 2.4GHz wireless traffic.

That said, you're right that you shouldn't even be to do anything. It should just work out of the box. Hopefully what you're experiencing isn't typical. I'm thinking of getting a Pro and it would suck if problems like this made it a quick return.

Have you tried calling support, btw?

Just as another voice, I've been running my house on the NVIDIA SHIELD(s) since 2015 and have had no issues, and definitely none like you're describing. YMMV.

the volume is controlled by the center of the remote. if you move your finger up and down on the middle of the remote it controls the volume.
