It only outputs 480p into a 720p projector because it doesn't pick up the resolutions. I tried using an HDCP hdmi splitter but it didn't work. It works when I use an HDMI to component converter but it's a piece of shit.

Same issue here, and I have an expensive (at the time) LG AF115 projector. It is 1080p native, but for some reason only shakes hands with the Nexus Player at 480p. So frustrating. Many queries to Google and Asus blame it on the projector mis-implementing HDMI standards. However, Roku and Chromecast have no problems outputting 1080p to it, so I'm sure it's the Nexus Player. Since it's a now discontinued device, I doubt we'll ever get a fix for it.
Possibly time to move onto the Shield or miBox.
See if there is an update for your projector to provide the resolutions.
