Amazon Video won't play video in 4k on the Nvidia Shield.

by Adam579

Trying to watch The Grand Tour in 4k but the quality is stuck on 1080p. All other apps play 4k content no problem. What gives?

Having the same problem on my Android TV (Sony X850D built-in).

Edit: I tried again last night and it worked. Received HDR immediately (which never happened before) and resolution went to 4K within a minute. Did not update the system software or Amazon app so dunno what caused the change but hope it continues. The stream looked spectacular.

Always starts in 1080p, will shift to 4k in a bit.

Try going into your shield settings for picture and checking the output settings. Make sure it is set to the recommended settings.

I had this issue when I tried it as well and it seems there is an issue in the Amazon app where it can fail the DRM check.

How are you guys getting Amazon Video on the shield? I tried sideloading it but it just crashes.

FFevo

Maybe it isn't shifting from 1080p to 4k due to your internet speed? It's possible that Netflix (for example) and Amazon have different requirements for when to up to 4k. If you are using wifi I'd suggest hardwiring.

There's a network speed bug if you are using a static IP on your shield instead of DHCP.

I have the same problem. Netflix works in 4k HDR while Amazon is stuck at 1080P.

Amazon app on my TV works fine.

Looks like I mine is back running at 4K HDR.

Go into Settings, Status and HDMI. What HDCP level is shown?

Adam579

Ya it is

Update: I fixed it on my TV by setting the output to 4k60hz instead of 59.90hz

Thought to do it because of this post https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/990462/shield-tv/amazon-video-on-5-02-2015-500gb-/post/5072643/#5072643

You can have a reference at this article which shows you how to enable 4K playback on Nvidia Shiled Pro https://www.howtogeek.com/251204/how-to-enable-4k-playback-on-the-nvidia-shield-android-tv/

There is usually a separate tile for UHD shows (at least there is on my Samsung Smart TV)

Look for the black UHD banner across the corner of the tile and you should get 4K version
