Low res on some live stations on Youtube, i.e. Sky News

by worldcitizencane

Sky News on Youtube on my Xiaomi Mibox3 allows me to set the resolution to 1040P, but the actual resolution remains 240P. Why is that? I have plenty of bandwidth, I'm on 100/100 fiber and take other full HD channels without problem. I can also watch it in 1040 on my phone and cast it to the Mibox. What's going on?

I have the same problem with a lot of live-channels.

It's a bug in the YouTube app for Android TV. It affects the Shield as well.

You can watch up to 4K videos through the YouTube app, but try accessing a live video stream through the app and you can't properly set the resolution. It defaults to like the lowest quality setting and even if you try to set it higher it won't work.

Nothing you can do about it other than hope that YouTube fixes it eventually (heh).

This post from October is when I first learnt about it myself:

Does it stick like that, or goes into high res after a few seconds?

I know with Sky News (live feed through crappy official app and through Pluto's live channel) both start low res for about 5-20 seconds (depending) and then turns to high res for the rest of the watching duration.

Maybe because it starts right away while others "load" for the few seconds? Either way, I never tried it on YouTube. Try Pluto or Sky App until someone knows a fix. If Sky app, you have to search "live" and scroll over to find it. Pluto is a few seconds behind in their broadcast compared to the official app.

I am using the Mi Box.

Fun fact: Sky doesn't even know it has an Android app! It's made by a stakeholder of Sky and appearently they don't communicate with each other.

Yes it sticks like that. I installed the YouTube plugin for Kodi and there it works fine in 1040p so I guess it's a bug in the YouTube app.
