Shield TV with HDHomerun n00b questions

by SonyNex5n

So I just cut the main cable and voip phone. I asked my provider to just give me the internet but they insisted to give me a 'promo' of internet + free basic cable for a cheaper price than internet alone so I took it.

So now I have Internet and basic cable. I connect the coax cable straight to the TV and get the basic channels (I'll return their cable box tomorrow)

So is all good but reading this forum, I found HDhomerun. My idea is to use the HDHR with the Live Channels app so everything stays in one place (TV Shield) and also be able to watch the basic local channels from my ipad in my bedroom.

So questions are

  • Will the HDHomerun Connect work with this basic channels from my provider? or do I need the prime with cablecard? I guess not if I'm able to connect straight to the TV.

  • My house is not large. If I don't need the prime, can I just buy the Connect or do I need Extend?

  • Description for the HDHR says 2 tuner. Does it mean that only 2 clients can be watching or does it mean that up to different 2 channels can be watch by multiple devices in the network ?

iPad doesn't support MPEG-2 decoding, so you'll need the Extend to transcode live TV.

You'll need cablecard for it to work with your cable provider. And it's 2 max for the OTA tuners. 3 with cablecard one. So, one recording, one watching, or two different people watching.

Make sure to cancel your TV when your promo is over. Also, watch your bill for that fun $7.00 fee for broadcast channels, and 15 bucks a month for their equipment they probably charged you for. Plus 5 more bucks for taxes and fees.

If your TV can get cable channels than the HDHomerun should as well.

My only choice is comcast and they did away with all of their clear QAM channels so even for basic cable I'd have to use the Prime with a cable card.
