Is there a way to make volume control suck less on the Shield?

by NoShftShck16

This is my first Shield (2017 version). The volume control is horrific. I understand the remote isn't always away, which is fine, but that isn't the issue. Sometimes one full swipe doesn't register, sometimes it raises the volume by one unit. Sometimes it raises it by 30. It has maxed out the volume and it's even lowered the volume before. I cannot for the life of me figure out the sweet spot to get consistent results.

For god's sake can someone help me. My wife is read to chuck this thing at my head.

I'd like to disable volume control all together. I want it at max all the time, because I control via a receiver.

Edit: Apparently there is a setting for this. Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced > Fixed Volume

I feel like the volume control had been universally hated and was one of the worst parts of the original shield. Why would Nvidia literally put the same shit out again? And it's not like it's an engineering challenge- it's a solved problem: 2 buttons! It's not even like a capacitive volume control was a main "feature" that would sound cool enough to help ship units- it's like a weird, terrible forced-feature that they could have easily fixed when they re-engineered everything else- and probably saved money, too.

Seriously, wtf Nvidia?

I have found the trick is in using it as if it were a physical slider, not doing swipes like with a touch screen, but rather slowly move your finger up or down through it.

Still I would prefer buttons though, but I think I can live with it.

Widgetcraft

I turned it off completely and now use the TV remote for that!

donanon

I agree, it is so difficult to set to the desired level.

I just disable the volume control. Accidentally changed the volume too many times while picking up the remote.

Using the Android TV app on your phone works the best. You can use your phone's volume control to control the Shield's volume. Other than that...the Shield controller (1st gen) works nicely because they are actual push buttons

I don't think there's anything you can do, aside from buying a different bluetooth remote like this one

groac

buy a mibox remote ?

FrayDabson

As others suggested. I control my volume with a different remote.

The way I have it setup. If I want I can technically control my TV, soundbar and sheild with the shield remote. Using IR and CEC. But I rather use my TV or soundbar remote to control volume because that slider is annoying.

Turn off the Shield's volume control and then use the control on your TV, receiver, etc.

For some reason, my shield volume used to fluctuate on top of the issues you mentioned, this solved that.

I always hated it too, not much choice though. I ordered one of the remotes for the XiaoMi MiBox and am going to see if it works properly with the SHIELD. I just like the design so much better. Besides, they're cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/282281306671?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

  1. Go buy receiver

  2. Buy a pair of solid speakers (Elac B6?)

  3. Buy a logitech harmony remote

  4. Live the dream

I've never used Shield's volume control.

feclar

Yea I havae the OG Shield, with controller and remote The controller properly does volume The remote I have never been able to get to adjust the volume

Sucks having 3-4 remotes to control a TV + Nvidia shield + soundbar I actually just turned off the soundbar so I have the TV remote to turn the TV off and to adjust the volume to the TV speakers

Soundbar is attached via digital so it is not controllable =(

clanton

I actually just updated my 2015 shield and enabled volume control through CEC. LOVING it! Albeit I'm using the volume control on the 2015 controller which has physical buttons...

bla8291

The 2015 shield controller has the same issue. As long as I'm not holding it down, it's great. But if I hold it down, I'll either mute the audio or blow out all my windows.

NowWithMarshmallows

Do you use your TV's speakers? Or a receiver? If you go into the settings and change the audio setting to "CEC" then the volume control feeds back to the tv/receiver to change that's volume. You may find that works out better for you. Essentially the audio from the shield stays at 'max' volume, but the controller can adjust a device further down the chain.

aonysllo

Yes, get another remote control. The one with shield sucks. Or you can use the game controller.
