Haven't heard anything about extracting Shield's apk (maybe it happened but hasn't been modded to work on all machines yet).
I only know you can get the phone's apk and that will work. Amazon will probably release it to all eventually, like Vudu did.
I use the SD app to browse easily & then watch everything in side-loaded Chrome for HD viewing. The app is listed a ton in this sub & on XDA as well.

It's available in many threads, but you need to get the phone APK, which has quite a bad user interface for Android TV.
The Android TV APK for Shield / Sony Bravia TVs has a good user interface but will not let you watch videos on Mi Box, so don't waste your time trying those.
